Political Correctness and a Fiat Currency
"Cultural Myopia" by Robert Zimmerman

Since reading the novel 1984, I’ve studied the direction of our society and have often wondered if such circumstances could ever take place in America. I have reached the conclusion they can, and they are.

Nearly 40 years ago, I wrote an essay about my personal observations of America and the direction it was headed. I wrote my thoughts and the genesis of those thoughts. I concluded the two dangers for America were political correctness and a fiat currency.

Political correctness had just begun rearing its ugly head in those days. I read writings of Milton Friedman and became aware of the dangers of a fiat currency.  His writing had a major impact on me. I will never forget one quote from him. “Only government can take perfectly good paper, cover it with perfectly good ink and make the combination worthless.” He also said, “If you put the federal government in charge of the Sahara Desert, in five years there’d be a shortage of sand.”

There is currently a “Covid relief bill” in Congress. The total amount is $1.8 TRILLION. They budgeted it through 2028! The crisis is today. The states that have managed the crisis the worst get the most money. As an example, there is $112 million in the bill for an underground train in Silicon Valley. Why don’t they pay for their own train? What does that have to do with Covid? There are billions in the bill not related to Covid. One must ask WHY?

There is a law of supply and demand. The more you have of something, the less it is worth. The less you have of something, the more it is worth. Where is the $1.8 trillion coming from? It’s coming from printing presses. That money doesn’t exist today. The American debt is approaching $30 trillion. It was unsustainable at $25 trillion. No one in our government is talking about this. If you don’t understand this problem, go to the internet and look up the Weimar Republic of 1921-1923 and read about the hyperinflation. A pound of bread, cost about a pound of paper money. It was called the wheelbarrow effect. People carried their money in a wheelbarrow when they went to the store.

One must ask, where does all of this end? What is the last name, word, statue, or monument we have to erase or demolish in order to satisfy everyone and their demands? In the last 12 months over 160 historic statues and monuments were destroyed or removed. Look at all of the sports teams and products that have changed their name, image, or associations in order to be accepted. Don’t forget all of the schools that have changed their names. Washington, Lincoln, Jefferson, and many others have had their names erased from history and buildings. I want to see the list of the people that have had their lives enriched or improved because of these actions.

“America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves.” [Abraham Lincoln] Mr. Lincoln would be appalled by the direction of our country.
