Flash fiction.
"Sophie's Ghost." by Sanku

There was no let up in the rain. Jatin drove his car carefully along the pitch dark road.

He turned into PK road. He inched the car trying to locate his next right turn- the turning at the Sophie Banyan tree. My God! the tree! His heart started thudding violently. Will I see Sophie, the white apparition which many people have claimed to have seen? He looked at his watch. Five minutes to twelve. May be he could speed past the tree.
He told himself not to be silly. Ghosts are the incarnations of one's own fear.

He peered through the windscreen to locate the sprawling banyan tree which the locals call Sophie Tree because ages back Sophie, a pretty girl was found hanging from its branch. Many people have reported seeing her ghost sitting on its branches. .. It is all a joke, Jatin tried to dismiss the unease starting in his tummy.

A figure suddenly floated out of a tree- a white apparition. His car stopped. There was no face, nor legs; It was more like a graphic painting of a faceless person. The apparition seemed to be swaying. For a moment he thought of his newborn twins. His wife Sweta ... No I am just imagining, there is nothing there.

But it was there. Through the sheets of rain he could still see the apparition swaying. Then it slowly moved into the right turn he had to take as if blocking his way. It stood there it floated there..swaying.
Jatin closed his eyes for a moment and with thudding heart he murmured 'If you are Sophie, let me through. I have not seen my babies. My wife is waiting. So Sophie sweetheart here I go". He took off as if the Devil was chasing him and drove straight without turning right.

He looked into the rear view mirror to see if the apparition was following. No. It had come down to the middle of the road again. He drove on and stopped only when he saw a familiar red sign "Toby Inn"
The Night Clerk looked up with disbelief as a profusely sweating Jatin staggered into one of their seats.
"Are you alright"?
"Can I make a call from your landline?" Calls from my cell phone are not going through".
Jatin dialled the landline number of his father- in- law.
"Sophie ..No Sweta" !
"Jatin where are you? Don't take the Sophie Tree turning." The road has caved in near the hospital. Dr Thomas drove his car right into it and is now in hospital."
Stunned, Jatin could not say anything.
"Jatin where are you?
"I am at the Toby Inn".
"Toby Inn? How come? Someone warned you?"
He was silent for a moment and then said softly, " Yes someone warned me."
A kind ghost.
"I will take a detour in the morning."
