 ABOUT
BEGIN AGAIN

Begin Again is a resilient "senior citizen". Reinventing and restructuring her life has become almost common place for her.

I love music, books, and sitting by the water. Each of these activities brings a sense of life to me.

Act 3 - Scene 1
"Words That Bind - Act 3" by Begin Again

ACT 3 - SCENE 1

PRESENT:
INT: EAGLES NEST CAFE - DAY

ALYSSA'S book slips from her hand and drops on the floor. The noise startles her back to reality.
LOUIS is standing next to their booth. KATE is looking up at him. ALYSSA releases a long sigh.
LOUIS begins to speak and ALYSSA can't take her eyes off him. As he begins to speak, his voice is void of all sensuality.

LOUIS
Wow! Kate...That was awesome. I'm glad you could meet me to rehearse our lines together.

KATE:
No problem...the plays this weekend. It's going to be the best.

KATE looks up at LOUIS, starry eyed and obviously in love.

KATE (CONT)
You are going to be the best!

LOUIS scoops up his belongings from the table.

LOUIS
I've got to run...I've got some free time tomorrow. Practice makes perfect, right?

LOUIS walks towards the door. He calls out over his shoulder as he approaches the door.

LOUIS
Thanks again Kate. You're swell!

He leaves the cafe. KATE stares into her coffee cup, biting her lower lip. ALYSSA leans into the aisle.

ALYSSA
Excuse me.. I don't mean to intrude but I would never had known you two weren't in love. It was breathtaking. Flawless!

KATE looks up and a tear runs down her cheek.

KATE
Thank you.

KATE sniffles and brushes the tears away from her eyes.

KATE
Once it was real for me, but Louis has moved on. All I have is the play now and memories.

ALYSSA
Moved on? How could he?

KATE
He met a girl whose family runs a prestige acting school in New York. They're both going there after graduation. He's looking for bigger and better things.

ALYSSA
How could anything be better than true love?

KATE
Louis says love is like a flower. It blooms, it wilts, and another one replaces it.

ALYSSA
I loved a guy like that once.

ALYSSA turns her head toward the window, her fingers toy with the silverware on the table.

KATE
What happened?

ALYSSA
Oh, I guess to make a long story short, I just told him goodbye.

KATE
I wish I was that strong. Instead I cling to every moment I can steal, wishing his words were true. It's hard to let go.

ALYSSA'S words are barely audible.

ALYSSA
Maybe I can make it easier for you.

KATE
What?

ALYSSA
Nothing important. Just said I wish it was easier for you.

ALYSSA slides out of the booth.

ALYSSA
Maybe I will see you two tomorrow.

ALYSSA starts for the door. KATE calls out to her.

KATE
Wait! You forgot your book.

KATE picks it up and reads the title before handing it to ALYSSA.

KATE:
Promises Broken... sounds sad. What's it about?

ALYSSA
A serial killer who believes in righting the wrong.

KATE:
Oooh, sounds too dark for me.

ALYSSA:
Not really... It's actually inspiring. Hope I see you tomorrow.

Alyssa leaves the cafe, hugging the book to her chest.
