carved stone
"symbol stone" by Colin John
I tread this land that my eyes do see,
standing stones astride, that walk with me,
fish that swim the never-ending sea,
forever blessed, I am forever free.

The paint on my face dries in the wind,
my cape is undone with broach unhinged,
my dagger shines in the light of the day,
the spoken word utters down Gaelic way.

The cross with curves that men cut fine,
wavy lines stand bold and live on in time
pebbles on the beach crunch underfoot
rocky cliffs are trodden by seabirds forgot.

A symbol stone is what I will leave
the crescent and beast in carved relief
to show our love for all that will cease
this wonderful life within our reach.
