Exceptional
This work has reached the exceptional level
Lives change so rapidly, but family values never do...
"Gran Said..." by Beejay
I found a picture book in my Gran's old chest of drawers,
People and places staring at me that I'd never seen before,
Gran said, it's a photo album, full of memories to cherish and keep,
Black and white photos, so boring, I tried not to fall asleep,
I take pictures with my phone, Gran, I filter and I crop,
Love hearts for a border, emojis at the top.

Once again I opened the album and I felt the photographs,
As I sat in the chair with the photos right there, family history snaps.
Gran said, they were taken with a camera, not a mobile phone,
A camera was taken on holidays and the rest of the year left at home,
Gran said, everyone now takes silly selfies or pictures of dogs and cats,
Years ago, so Gran said, there was none of that!

Just then a "ping" on my mobile phone alerted me to a text,
A friend had sent a video, but do you know what I did next?
I placed my phone in my pocket and looked at the album again,
Searching through my family to see who looked the same,
Gran said, I looked like an uncle with a moustache who wore a hat,
Gran looked at me and I looked at her, then we both began to laugh!

Then Gran said let's have a cup of tea,
Made in the pot, properly,
I said Gran, not for me, I only drink Costa's iced coffee,
Gran said nothing but gave me that look
And soon I was drinking tea from a cup!
Gran winked at me, I smiled back, not daring to offer any wisecrack!

My phone may be digital, technical even predictable,
But looking at black and white photos of whiskery old men,
And thumb sucking babies in enormous prams,
Listening to stories of holidays told by Gran,
With no TikTok, Twitter or Instagram,
I realise now is better than....

Anything, it's magical!
