My response to Robyn Corum's quiz
"Quiz # 6: Joan E" by Joan E.

1.) If you could witness any event past, present or future, what would it be?

I have taken the California Coast Starlight train from Los Angeles to San Luis Obispo on Thanksgiving Day for the past nine years with my husband and our rail-loving son, and I hope to make it ten years! The coastal views are exceptional and the town is appealing, plus our holiday, Amtrak dinner is always a treat.

2.) Did you ever do anything, growing up, that got you in trouble? What was it? How much trouble did it cause? Do you regret this action now, or did it help you grow stronger?

I did something I thought would get me into trouble when I was eleven and announced to my mother that I could not go to church with her any more. But when I explained to her the reason, she acquiesced. I had been taking part in our parish church's arts and crafts classes, and one day, when I arrived at St. Theresa's in Brooklyn, there was a big bus parked out front, with an even bigger banner plastered on it, which read "Orphans' Day at Coney Island". Puzzled, I asked the Mother Superior what that was all about. She shushed me and said, "We get to go on all the rides--F R E E!  I never looked back...

3.) Try to trick us. Tell us two truths and a lie and allow your reviewers to guess which one is untrue. (Try hard not to give it away!)

a.) I decided I wanted to teach in the second grade but only lasted seven years in the classroom.
b.) I owned a feed store during college and tended farm animals like geese, horses and steers.
c.) My husband and I owned a condo in Mazatlan, Mexico, but we sold it because we wanted to travel to other destinations.

* Soooo -- which one is the lie???? Let me know what you think in your comments.

4.) Have you ever been in the newspaper? If yes, what for?

The only time I have been in the newspaper is for my poetry. It is always gratifying to see my work in print.

5.) Have you ever entered a talent contest? If so, what was your talent? And how did you do?

I do not enter many contests, and a talent show would be last on my list!

Many thanks to Robyn for allowing us to get to know one another better. Chuck Waxman's photograph entitled "A Long Way From Home" seemed a good fit for these reflections.
