Exceptional
This work has reached the exceptional level
A man in love waits to hear if his sweetheart will have him.
"Have I Ought to Offer Thee?" by Jacqueline O.
Have I ought to offer thee?
My winsome one so fair,
Save the efforts of my handiwork
And the life we two shall share!
I have but humble cotter's Croft
For which to lay my head,
But swear to thee that tenderness
Shall always share our bed.

Have I ought to offer thee?
So unlike thy father's house,
For I must surely labor
To provide for such a spouse.
No jewels nor social standing
Can I offer unto thee,
Save the jewel of my affection
And a life that's full and free.

Have I ought to offer thee?
Thou art lovely and so fine,
Save the burning of my heartstrings
As they beg to make thee mine?
Could I but claim the spirit
That so beckons unto me,
O Darling, answer swiftly:
Wilt thou consider me?

Author Notes
I love writing in the classical styles of the old poets, with stilted structures and elegant speech. I also loved the idea of an adoring lover beseeching his sweetheart to have him, regardless of his low position. This poem tells the story of his proposition, and leaves the result up to the whim of the reader.
Pays one point and 2 member cents.
