Exceptional
This work has reached the exceptional level
An innocent victim of war
"A Dying War Horse" by PeterRHW

Among once peaceful orchard's charred remains
The dead lay heaped, where wounded wept and cried.
With stench of powder heavy hung the air,
Midst carnage cruel a horse lay on his side.

Blood flowed where rifle shot had pierced his hide,
His legs were broken, bent by cannon shell,
But still he raised his head to look at me,
So innocent, amid that stinking hell.

And in that look was what no word can tell,
Nor anger, only questions could I see:
"How can you treat your fellow mankind so?"
And, "Tell me, why did you do this to me?"

War Poetry Contest contest entry

Author Notes
Inspired by a soldier's letter home during the American civil war. I have read that during this, and other wars, the life expectancy of a cavalry horse was no more than eight months.
Pays one point and 2 member cents.
