We sometimes do not assimilate.
"This Is Me" by Raffaelina Lowcock

Alone, though surrounded by people, because their thoughts are not mine. As I hear senseless speeches I cannot accept meaningless words. I observe yet I cannot take it all in; those ways are not my ways. I'm following a path that lies before me toward a goal that beckons me. Hard though it is, I shall not stumble heading along with confirmation. Unbending and straight is the passage I see, the glorious path ahead of me. Quite determined with strength in my heart to attain that goal undaunted. With success comes comfort to be in the place where I belong.

Author Notes
There are times in our lives when we are in the wrong place and it is quite evidently not our bag. "This Is Me" is one of those times.

"I stay my step, I make delays,
For what avails this eager pace?
I stand amidst the eternal ways,
For what is mine shall know my face,

Asleep or wake, by night or day.
The good I seek is seeking me.
No wind shall drive my bark astray
Nor change the tide of destiny
(Notes: by John Burroughs) from Waiting.
