The Dwelling Place by Suzanna Ray

A single stone step before the tilted lintel lay 
where many a foot had trod over the many millennia this dwelling had stood, withstanding the fierce elements
of wind and rain.
Bravely facing the sea of crashing waves splintering themselves on jagged rocks of black and gray.
Never had I seen so bleak a place as this . . . shattered to be knowing
I was to be it's next inhabitant.

Lintel it to our list of obscure words.

a lintel is a horizontal beam above an opening, like a window or door in a house
