-A very good image,
notes, and story, Jim.
-The introduction really sets
the tone for the piece, and you
must have been mortified.
-She had the right idea, but
certainly did use the right approach,
in my opinion. Words are very hurtful,
and you show the result as time goes
on, and you keep feelings inside.
-The inner dialogues were compelling,
as well as your experience at your
mother's grave, and learning how to forgive.
-I am glad your inner child didn't give up, either.
-I also understand your desire to achieve
perfection; I think it sets us up for failure,
for I have come to believe there is no
such thing as perfection.
-I love your ending line, and how you
came to this point in your life.
-This is beautifully written, and I imagine
there are many people who can relate to it.
-I wish I had a 6th star to put on this.

A well written piece that really held my interest. I can empathize with Jimmy and salute his discipline to better himself, financially as well as emotional. Thanks for sharing.

I wouldn't necessarily call this teacher a mentor, perhaps motivator because she deliberately set out to embarrass you in front of your fellows. It was an ignorant thing for her to say, but sadly that kind of ignorance was more common than it should have been and perhaps that negative attention did motivate a few students and now we've gone too far the other way.

Just a few tense changes along the way in your write, here is an example of one. ... snickers and jeers until Mrs. Judd calls - should be called the children back to order.

This is a fine example of success leading the way and hopefully not at too great an expense.

Excellent biographical non-fiction and I am sure you have many experiences to relay in this challenge of growing up.

Much enjoyed this and keep going. :)

Gloria, thank you! Judd certainly was not a mentor for me but she was a motivator for certain. I am proud to say I had two teachers in a span of 16 years of education that did become mentors and for them, among a handful of others, I am eternally grateful. I review the tense throughout thank you!

I read this chapter and I recognize my own childhood in some of your lines, and yet you manage to find the power to forgive and move on. I still fight some of those demons.

What a nice story and such nice characters that intertwine perfectly together;-)

If I had to change anything it would be the background, maybe black would suit it better?

EXCELLENT job! Thanks for sharing;-)
Blessings;-)

This is rather tough to read until you get to the end--thank goodness for the end. It is very well written and tells the story emphatically. One can feel the anguish of an underprivileged child.

Thank you for sharing your struggle with us. As a teacher myself, I am shocked that a teacher would say that in front of the entire class. Your writing technique is very good.

I think it's an interesting essay about motivation and social acceptance, the delicate balance within the self between wanting to fit in, being angry at not having what others have, and doing something about it. There's that tremendous pressure from all around us to succeed, on society's terms, on cultural terms. This piece raises all kinds of questions of how motivation takes shape, where it takes us, and how, whether the ends justify the means. Important questions. estory

This is a lovely and strong story chapter of great struggles and overcoming them. I am proud of that child. A boy with his spunk will go far in his life. Perfectly wonderful!

Funnily enough I had a teacher called Mrs Judd and I remember her being stern and strict as well. I'm glad that she had a positive impact on your life, even though it may not have seemed like that at the start. I enjoyed reading your piece.
