You did a great job, Katherine. I would say your first day was
met with great success. I could imagine all the little kids singing
that song and having fun. Saturday classes seemed odd, but
apparently, it was the way to go.

    Thank you for this complimentary review. Saturday classes were the bane of my life for years. That was one reason I agreed to teach - better than being blocked at home doing housework waiting for the kids to be free for a short weekend.

You mention the end of the school year. As August approaches I reflect on my work in therapy regarding the beginning of school. If I were teaching now sans therapy, I would be filled with dread & anxiety. I did not at the time believe in myself. My therapist helped me to continuously envision myself going into the first day & beyond with confidence. The next year's beginning, even though I had had a previously wonderful teaching year, that same dread weighed over me, so much so, I totally forgot I had done well the previous year. After 2 July's of this I finally was able to sneak through those trigger times without them snagging me. After that it was only s memory of growth. I am pleased to see how well you initiation went. It must have been a bit daunting yet exciting.

The reason I enjoyed this story is, after I retired as a counselor with a government agency, I worked part-time at a private school three days a week. I went back to college to get a teaching certification and taught full-time for fourteen years. Your story reminded me of those days. I'm glad you presented the French conversations in English, and could appreciate all of your preparation to teach all of the classes. It sounds like a daunting project.

    Yes, I remembered you had taught. I loved it, as I hope you'll see from the next chapter (when I get time to write it. This is a busy weekend of real life). Glad you enjoyed this, and that I've made the right decision to transpose French into English henceforth. It wasn't as daunting as it sounds once I got into the routine. This is a very interesting story about your first adventure with teaching English to children. What a challenge it must have been for you. I like the idea of using a song to start out with, as it is much easier to memorize words set to music. We sing some French choruses in our church, and even though I don't speak French, I can remember the words to the choruses, and often find them going through my mind.

    Yes, I never learnt German, but I still remember a German song I was taught as a child. I think that was why I decided to make songs a big part of my lessons, along with my experience of raising my children. Remember, the Ministry brief wasn't to teach a language per se but to make children aware of linguistics. I interpreted that to mean above all teaching them that a foreign language was a fun thing. I also wanted them to understand similitudes / different pronunciations of identical letter combinations / different word orders etc. etc. I hope this will come across more in the next chapter. Yes all that is something of a challenge. But the British always like challenges. Thanks for reviewing Kate xx

Thank you for sharing. Yes, a chocolate button would work miracles. In my school district it was against the rules, to use food as an incentive. I'm so jealous. LOL

I love children, but just the thought of having to teach them a foreign language or having a class for a whole day sounds maddening to me. LOL. You're tougher than I am. Thanks for sharing.

    I used to come home on a Saturday lunch-time and skip lunch. Instead, after my aperitif I collapsed into bed for at least two hours. I also don't know how real teachers keep going all day... almost every day. I admire them so much. Thanks for reviewing, Kate xx

Every time I hear a story from a teacher, I am reminded how hard your work is, how much time and effort you give (often for free), and how much is expected of you, including from other adults and, in this case, other teachers.

In the next to the last paragraph, should there be a comma after "in English"?

Well written and I wouldn't worry about the length - if it's interesting and well presented it will move along for the reader. Good stuff!

    Thanks for reviewing, and for your suport of teachers. I'm not a real one as I only want to teach pupils who want to learn. Comma, yes. Length, this note is for me as DD entries were originally intended to be short, maybe less than 300 words, but certainly never more than 500. I have to think about what to do with the longer ones before publication. Kate xx

This is a great recollection of how a thirty-year career gets started. It sometimes drags up a hill, I guess, but in your case you are shot out of a cannon.

Being a teacher, and my daughter being an infants' teacher, I enjoyed your story a lot. Even with my high-schoolers, I made them sit in alphabetical order by surname and gave them a place-card for their desk, with their first name until I got to know them all! his looks to be an interesting series.

Suggestion: " My husband and I had settled for an au-pair", not "me and my husband".
"The Ministry of Education" needs a capital to start the sentence of quoted speech.
"well before senior school" (no need for a hyphen, as these are two separate words).

I like the combination here - of being railroaded into things (I get it lots at work, be the 'techy guy') that we can do but don't necessarily want to, and of being ill at-ease in social situations. And then to learn about how you went about the task and did so well, you got further railroaded :-).

I very much enjoyed following this slice of your journey.
