I find your story fascinating. I never thought about how difficult it would be to judge a poetry contest, especially if many if the poems were good. I like how you arrived at your decision, setting certain standards for the winners.

Thanks for your thoughtful review and the corrections. I see I need to be much more attentive to punctuation

I reviewed this story earlier so maybe you can help me understand why a poem or story comes up again after I have reviewed it already?? Good writing though.

I found that rereading helped me keep perspective on the project. Thanks for your review.

You expressed your thoughts/feelings well of how being a judge in a poetry contest affected you and what you learned. I enjoyed reading your well-constructed post. You made several valid points about the judging process. I believe many could learn from this information.
Thanks for sharing.
Respectfully, Jan

That was quite an opportunity you were given. And your approach to the challenge and its difficulties was daunting. I learned a lot from your methodology if ever I'm in the position of being a judge.

Emma (or Emmay), I have one teeny suggestion. It will probably double your read count. Go back and space between your paragraphs. More white space. It's a small thing, but readers make decisions on whether or not to pursue a piece by how pleasant they perceive the reading will be. They've got a lot to choose from, so why send them away?

Just a thought.

Your essay is very illuminating. I don't think I would ever try to judge a poetry contest, but I like reading about how you did. You are right in stating outright, that as a judge you had to be subjective. But I am really impressed with how--after much reading and rereading--you came up with truly credible criteria for evaluating the finalists. Your essay is entertaining, informative, and very coherent. Rod
