If I could give 10 stars I would. Your poem flowed effortlessly and was so easy to read.
Thank you for sharing the background of your poem, it adds to the beauty and depth.
You have a knack for writing poetry. I have written poetry for years and my style is very similar to yours. I look forward to being able to share my work with this community as well. Keep up the good work! :)

Such depth, devotion and beauty here! A poem that speaks to my own experience after thirty some odd years as an RN in Nursing Homes--most particularly on dementia units! I know well the bittersweet ache as we watched even the most cantankerous dementia riddled "friend" release their ever weakening grasp on this life and slip into the next life. I too believe there is more...I know not what, precisely, but (I bet you've experienced this as well)--I have heard the dying call out to spouses that had died years before, or exclaim on the beauty of the light, or the angels... Perhaps the best poem of yours I've had the pleasure to read. God bless you for the incredible courage to care for that special population... A shining example of faith, if ever I've seen it!--Karenina

I was domestic staff and in a small bush hospital that became what's called a "Multi Purpose Service" which included the Aged Care wards and an Acute ward. I didn't work past core hours, as such, so no, I never heard them call out to loved ones or the angels, more's the pity. I have heard them calling out "NURSE!" over and over, and been called a "grub" by one who had me confused with one of her Great Grandchildren, as it turned out lol!

I don't think Western society has it right with regards to care of our elderly. I believe native tribes and other cultures have got it right, ie, they don't toss their elderly parents/grandparents in to a nursing home. They look after them in their own homes, or they remain within the Tribe, being revered for their wisdom. That's how it should be.

In Australia, the plight of the elderly continues, with very little funding from our rather "elitist" government. Maybe one day, that'll change. For now, it's a challenge for anyone involved in the care of elderly, and disabled, people.

Thank you for your wonderful review! I really appreciate it xoxoxoxoxoxox

You have opened my eyes to another whole cultural perspective... My heart bleeds for those who have no home to remain in...so often it is not for lack of wanting to do so- Still, I'm part Algonquin Indian and I agree. The tribal community would never dream of handing their elders over to outside care!--Karenina

We Westerners almost treat our elderly like a piece of furniture that's seen its days. I find that sad. Australia is a very disjointed culture for family, owing to our first settlers coming over here as convicts largely. Convicts who had to leave their families behind in their mother country. I guess we got used to being independent of family, but I still find it very sad indeed.

Hello, fellow Gypsy :)

I love the thought...I have lived in your pure heart...Thank you for all you do for our elders...it's such an important job. I hope when I am very old and just about to die I have a loving person like you by my side, hopefully family but you never know. Well done!

My first 5 star rating. I simply loved your second 4 lines. It invovled me deeply into your world/poem. There is a lot of feeling here. This is an outstanding poem, I can't say more than that!

I,too, have worked in a nursing home and attended patients in their final hours. It truly is, I believe, a transition to the next place. What a comfort this poem could be to the families of those making this transition.

GMC,

Oh, my word! How precious!!! If you gave this to any member of a nursing home (who still had all their faculties, of course. *smile* ) it would offer so much encouragement and comfort. This goes to show your heart and level of care. Bless you!

Thank you very much indeed, Robyn. That is a lovely idea, and maybe now it might be appreciated. Back then, I framed it and put it by her bedside, but someone else broke the frame and left it face down. I ended up taking it home, discouraged and hurt that someone could do that.

reply by robyn corum on 31-Oct-2020
No way, girl. You go buy a BIGGER, HEAVIER frame and put it right back up. Don't let the jealous losers get you down.

I think your poem is very well done and I like it very much.
I did not grow up a spiritual or religious person and yet, I found your work very appealing and comforting...more so than many of the spiritual poems that are regularly offered on this site.
There is such a sweet softness in your work, almost melodic. That is the best way I can describe it.
Nice job. Blessings to you and yours.

This is an excellent poem you've written, I see you live in NSW. I live in Adelaide SA, you know what o believe, I play guitar and sing in a variety group, and although we visit nursing homes and entertain, we haven't done it for awhile, the residents love us entertaining them, but with Covid restriction, life is more important than life, so we haven't done it for awhile. This is brilliant my, friend, o love it, articulate, smooth, with great rhyming and a sensitive narrative, blessings Roy
