I am so sorry for your loss. It had to be very difficult to lose both parents in the same month. Your poem represents this loss, of pure sadness and the death of winter. Very well written showing the similarities of the cold death of winter and your personal devastating loss. Grief is personal and everyone handles it differently and in their own time. You own it, so don not let anyone tell you differently. God Bless you! Well deserved, Nlue Ribbon, All Time Best and Seal of Quality.

A strong combination of images and feelings, with the discomforts of winter in sharp contrast to the more soothing presence of spring. A fitting portrayal of feelings associated with the loss of both parents during the midst of winter's unpleasant conditions. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and feelings.

Your sonnet is in perfect form, EM. Your use of descriptive words and great imagery makes it easy for readers to see and understand how you feel about winter. I could feel both and the longing for better days (Spring). My sincere condolences on the loss of your parents.

Respectfully, Jan

Thank you for the great review, Jan. Those were very sad times - winter is actually a metaphor for a winter of the soul.

Hi Muse, this is an excellent sonnet with good use of iambic meter and pure end rhymes. The subject matter is poignant and fitting for the sonnet form. I am very sorry for your loss and my heart goes out to you.

Such beautiful sonnet about the passing of time...and how it impacts us!
The imagery and wording are very strong. No wonder it has a seal on it! Congratulations!

The first stanza is entirely dedicated to the roughness of arriving winter.
I especially appreciated the metaphor:
"nature's steel is showing signs of rust"

Also, this is quite a closing statment:
"its spite is our illusions' deadly toll."

Powerful writing, my friend!
Then, the second stanza shows what we leave behind - and the desire to gain it back:
"before we feel its fragrant breath again."
While you make it clear that it will take some time to get it back...

I love the change of tone in the third stanza. It ls a subtle turn, that allows us to see more deeply the personal impact of 'winter' and allows us to see it as a metaphor for life's struggles and aging.
I SO love what you did here:
"peaceful pier from where my dreams depart."

Thank you for the exceptional review and the six stars, Jyoti. I am honored. Now you can see the whole collection I submitted for the seal - you might look through the sonnets - there are 11 of them. This is part 1 - and the end of each sonnet is a link to the next. You might use it as a reference when submitting your own collection.

This poem uses some powerful images to create a wintry scene. The gray background and desolate picture help to get the message home. Thanks for sharing this one.

I'm so sorry for your loss.
A perfect picture to depict the winter season in the north. It almost looks like the road I lived on in northwest PA. Now, living in the south, I rarely visit the great north-land in winter.
A well written English Sonnet in iambic pentameter with excellent rhyme, internal rhyme and good use of alliteration throughout.

Blessings
Janet
