I really liked this story poem about the long-standing relationship between a man and his horse. Especially liked the last verse, which capped it off nicely. Usually it's the animal being loyal to the human, nice to see it work the other way around.

My only criticism is that I don't care for shared/hired as a rhyme, but I have nothing to suggest in its place.

Thank you for stopping by and reading my work. As to shared/hired, I've never felt exact rhyme was always necessary in a poem. Slant rhyme in this case is good enough. I don't use a word for exact rhyme if it's not the word I need to convey my point. Thank you. Cowboy

I always heard that a dog was man's best friend. After reading your poem

I find out that the horse is man's best friend. Spending most of my life In Manhattan
I never had a horse. I now live in San Diego and I do not see any horses here.
Your writing was entertaining and I consider it a literary piece. It was done
very cleverly and well executed. It was easy reading with simple language I
Like. I would like to read more of your writings.
I was enchanted and contended.

Thank you. That's high praise indeed. I often write about animals because, as far as loyalty goes, they are unsurpassed. You can always count on them to be there. I can't say that about people who usually have their own agenda. Oh, well, enough moralizing. I have other animal poems. Check them out. My best. Cowboy

That was a great story and to the very end. You have a great command of telling the story, that makes the reader want to know the ending. I want a horse! I had been bucked off one when I was a young child, and because of that experience has always been afraid. I would love to raise one from a young colt because of the bond that is shared between horse and human is pretty remarkable. And to be over my fear!
Loved your poem!

Thank you. I appreciate the enthusiastic review. You would never regret having a horse. And you know that old saying about getting back on the horse. It's pretty much true. If you raise one of your own from a colt, I don't think it would ever throw you. Come down to the corral and I'll pick one out for you. Cowboy

Being a horse lover, I found this very moving. The bond between a person and that special horse is one only horse lovers can understand. I remember the day my parents decided they would finally give me the papers to my horse. I had raised her from a yearling filly and we were together every day. By then she was in her mid teens. I just looked at my parents and said I didn't care about the papers. That horse and I had something far more lasting.

Reckless and you have that bond. Thank goodness he was with you that day to save your life. Such trust and devotion is remarkable.

Great story poem. You had me in tears.

If a writing can evoke tears, then it has truly succeeded. I appreciate the kind review and the awarding of 6 stars. That is the ultimate compliment. Cowboy.

Oh my goodness--I have tears in my eyes reading this. Such a fine poem. Well rhymed, clear, flows, interesting, touching--what more can I say? Who doesn't love horses--all animals really. Enjoyed this so much. Marilyn

Well, what would a cowboy be without his horse? That would be like herding cats. It just couldn't be done. I appreciate the six stars so much. If it made you cry and stirs such emotion, I must have done something right. If you like horses, you need to read "The Mustang". It probably won't pay much, but it's a tear jerker, too. Cowboy.

Hi Cowboy. Will definitely read "Mustang." Those amazing icons of American heritage are being slaughtered left and right. It sickens me. Many organizations try to save them. Thank you for telling me about your piece. Marilyn

Old Reckless is a composite of several great horses. I've written a lot of cowboy poems and the horse is nearly always an integral part of those poems. Cowboy

I feel the same way about my kitties. Your poem is a great tribute to the bond animals and man share when they live and work close together. Good job on the rhyme. Your lines flow smoothly, and the story is awesome. Good job and thanks for sharing.

I struggled with the colours but I did really enjoy the poem. It reminded me of poems I studied when I was in school and it is what got me into poetry. I look forward to reading more of your work.

I've recently entered a short poem into a contest. It seems my long poems don't do well. People don't seem to want to read anything that will take a little time, whether good or bad. Cowboy.
