Trust is such a precious characteristic and when it is lost it damages the mind's focus. It creates difficulty where there should be none because too much thought is wasted on nothingness.
The poem is very direct in its intention and the message sent is totally received. The alliteration in the last stanza "amid sacks of snakes" adds another degree to the flow.

This is a sad poem about how love and hope can be severed by
one not standing up to the relationship and how it affects the
soul of the betrayed.
I had to go way back to find something I hadn't reviewed yet.
Keep writing
Joan

How sneaky are those paranoid fears that test & trap our hearts and minds.
As the saying goes, To all those who are paranoid, YES, they really are out to get you

Been reading a number of the pieces but don't want to make you crazy reviewing everyone. I really liked this one though. The words and phrases are so picturesque that one can see the poem, rather than just reading it.

Hi, Bob! I'm finally getting a chance to look at the work of the people I'm following:) Thought I'd have a look at this in your portfolio as it doesn't have as many reviews as some of the others:)
I like the image. The rose and letter is an evocative contrast to the title of "the predator," suggesting something of a dangerous seduction.
Ah, "truth" as a predator! It seduces us with hope then doesn't deliver, leaving us without joy or illusion. Powerful message.
"sacks of snakes" that "crawl" the psyche is a powerful image in metaphor.
The only concern I have with the poem is "pieces of eight" (?) This may simply be a literary allusion to a tradition I don't know:) Have to look it up now!
Thanks for sharing this. Great piece.
Stacia

Wow Bobba, nice write and despite the fact that betrayal can make your skin crawl, you managed to make it quite palatable here. Trust is one of the few things given freely and then abused so mercilessly with little or no thought. Some beaut phrases in this succinct write.
Your brevity and profoundness knows NO end.
Well done and remind me never to betray you. LOL
Pip

PS I know you are gonna say I DON'T have to go back this far...don't worry.
Its what I like to do...and please there is absolutely NO pressure on you to do the same. I hate the tit for tat bs that gets around this godforsaken joint.

Aaah, Pip. You are such a sweetheart to go back in my portfolio. I love it! I have two short stories I am really proud of if you ever have the inclination.."The Interview" and "The Faithful" both are oldies..like 2008 or before. Yikes! If you do read them, let me know what you think. Do you like surprise endings? LOL..X Bob

reply by closetpoetjester on 16-Mar-2012
    I lurve surprise endings! LOL
Lemme catch up on those other ones first, then I read the others when I can.
    Cheers Pip

An anxious heart certainly is a prime target for betrayal. Often people see and feel what they want to see and feel rather than the truth. Betrayal, as you poem so skillfully relates, is truly a killjoy. Excellent imagery, Bob - a great contest entry. Best of luck to you. Wish I had a six left for this one. Blessings, Linda
