I'd say to get another addiction. One that won't kill you. Or don't :). But I smoke all the time, and the only thing that stops me from lighting a new cigarette with an old one is having stuff that I can go in and be addicted to apart from the cigarette. I guess it's trading an addiction for other addictions, but if it works well enough, why not? My other addictions are secret by the by ;). I'm not sure this will help, but I hope all goes well for you. I really do.

What a wonderful review - but I wonder if I could guess some of those addictions...LOL. In any event, you say you are still smoking, so that won't help me. But your encouraging wishes do help. Thank you very much. And thank you for the amazing rating too. I'm so glad you liked it.

I reviewed your poem first before reading this (trying to catch on on backlog) This is a convincing piece of how addictive and harmful nicotine is .My hubby started at fourteen and it took a traumatic event to make him stop cold turkey. Good thing he did since three years later he was a diabetic! Anyway, best of luck in your attempt to kick the habit. I would be the same way about chocolate.

Entering day three and day two was rough - worse than day one, which surprised me. I'm cold turkey, like your husband. What's works to inspire is positive reinforcement like this, my friend. Thank you very much.

Good for you, Dawn. I'll be sending positive thoughts and energy your way. I'm proud of you, my friend. Your situation reminds me of a great AA saying - keep quitting 'til you quit. Looks like that's exactly what you're doing and I think this time it will stick!! Hugs, Bev

Hi Ideasaregems-Dawn,

Here's a little seecret that helps quit smoking. Just at the opening of the channel to the eardrum, is a sort of flat section. Beneath this is a junction of nerve endings, which, if stimulated, cause a release of the endorfins that tell the addicted tissues in the lungs and the brain, they've had their 'fix.' Place the tips of the little finger on this shelf and gently massage it everytime you feel the craving. After about two weeks the craving starts to ease as the addicted tissues are slowly replaced by new growth which is not addicted...

Good luck with this. When I quit in 1981, I had mouth ulcers and then developed 'sties' on the eyelids for about two years after that. It is the poisons working their way out of your system.

Nicely written confession though, and it is very descriptive of what the smoker goes through in chucking the habit ...

Patrick

Thank you ever-so-much for your support, Patrick - I am finding that's helping more than anything. I shall certainly try your suggestion too. I'm glad you found the article well-written. I guess it kept me occupied too; a bit easier when the mind is busy creating something.

Most interesting, Dawn - and believable.
I gave up 30 yrs ago by finishing off a
packet and did well until we had a family
upset and I started again - but after a
month, I gave up again and have never looked
back.

You see, my father died of lung-cancer (a heavy smoker)
but then he was 82 and he did what he wanted in life.
But I have to say, it was a terrible slow death and a great relief when he went after seeing him suffer.

Two of my three sons smoke still, altho not around the house - and I would dearly love them to give up, but they
are grown men and need to make that decision themselves. My middle son tried those patches that didn't work, so I suggested he stuck them over his mouth so he couldn't put the fag between his lips -- made him laugh but he didn't give up.

Only the person themselves can do it.

Margaret

So true, and I am finding the supportive things people say of great comfort and aid. That's much better than anything else. Thank you so much, Margaret. I'm so sorry to hear of your father's slow passing. No, no one wants to die slowly, suffering. I am doing okay, and I know I will feel better when I am no longer a smoker. I did the first time I quit, and I was much younger then, so I imagine there will be quite a big difference this time. Thank you for your support and good wishes.

: Don't you mean, 'I am testy right now, frown?' LOL.
My dad smoked for many years and one day he said to my mother, "is that what I'm paying for cigarettes? What a bloody fool I've been!" And he never smoked again!
Must have been the shock!
I wish you the best of luck and good lungs in the future. You are too attractive to wither from cigarettes. Giddy

'Camels Are Cool.' Is that because they carry a lot of water in those humps? Who told you about the Camel Cigarettes sent to women during the war? Okay testy, I'll give you a Good Luck Wish. But you only have one go!

You always produce such excellent writing. I was hoping to read the story was fictional, but since it's not, I wish you luck, health and will add you to my prayer list begging for success. Get as testy as you want but pick up your pen and write, write, write when the urges won't behave.
One small suggestion.

"I had started younger than either of my siblings had."--might read better if you leave the "had" off the end of this sentence.

Thank you - I agree; that sentence was awkward, and I have re-worded it.
Thanks for a great review and a good suggestion; problem is, that, too is a trigger - LOL - I was the stereotypical smoker/writer. I wasn't a chain smoker, but that cigarette often seemed to help me think! I'm glad you liked the read, anyway - proves there's hope without the weed. :)
