It's amazing! "I'm going to write something, dammit" (got to be an affirmation) for me. This is great information that I need to know. Taking notes. Hopefully soon my thoughts are going to speak to the paper. I like your details about muse. I got to let my muse, write. I will read more of your writing. I want to learn more of what a top ranked author offers the community. This is very good to know.

Thank you, odelotdx. Oh, I don't know much I have to offer. As for the rankings on FanStory, don't put too much stock in that. Find writers you like to read--ranked, or not. I hope I'm one you like, but one never knows. If you have any questions about the site, I'll answer as best I can. Thanks again. Peace, Lee

Hi Humpwhistle! I, for one, loved your little pep talk. I love humor that makes you feel it was born that way. When writers try too hard with humor and 'western dialog' imo they fail miserably. This piece (again) does not disappoint and oddly enough about 10 minutes ago I was thinking of and how you said: "put two people together and see what they do and say." That was great advice and it has not failed me once! I just put two ordinary people in a buckboard and send them to town and see what they do. A story unfolds. I'm reading everything I can find to read and writing in between. This lifestyle fits me to a "T". Thanks for being almost everyplace I go! GoodHearted Woman Marcia

Thank you, Marcia. I'm glad my 'put two people together' strategy is working for you. There are characters living in our heads. We just have to put them someplace. Like letting a genie out of a bottle. The trick is, never lead characters. Follow them. They'll take you somewhere you didn't expect to go. Thanks for rummaging my portfolio, Marcia. I'm honored.

    Peace, Lee

I liked the directness of his voice. I felt the author was personally speaking to me but I think that was achieved more by the well thought out answers than the questions. The answers were ripe with metaphors that as a writer related very well to the situation being discussed. This was an excellent example of knowing your audience.

Superb! I completely agree and use this methodology myself. Because I wrote news release for money for many years (as a freelancer), I taught myself to just write. And voila! The words were there. You have captured and totally dismissed the angst some people put themselves through. I especially loved the invisible friend reference! I have my muses, too. I appreciate them, but I don't rely on them because they may be on vacation when I need to write. Thanks for this wonderful treatise on getting off our butts and putting the words into play. Best.

Thank you, wordcraft, for the golden galaxy, and for digging up this piece. I worked in the ad business for many years, so I had to write against deadlines, too. Writer's block and muses are popular topics on this site, and one day I'd just had enough of it!. Thank you again. Peace, Lee

I just loved it! And I couldn't have said it better myself. You nailed it on the head about the self doubt and the fear of not being good enough. "There's nothing to fear but fear itself." And that's what holds us back. Thanks for this. You are my hero. :)

Me, you did not offend, but my Muse is over in the corner plotting your demise with the Green Fairy. . . .

I thought writing meant you had on occasion writer's block. . .

Nice approach to the complaint. It's like the T-shirt I got at a writers conference that said "Just Finish the Damn book!"

Thank you, Petriesan. I think you get it. Writer's block is caused by not writing--not the inability to write. I'm glad you enjoyed. Peace, Lee

Haha Lee - you could have simply sent me an email, lol.
Pacy and funny, yet the humour does not hide the truth. We do indeed need to stop wingeing and just get on with it.
Tell me honestly; do you *ever* read something you've written and think it's crap? I find that hard to believe. Or perhaps you simply don't post the stuff that's less good. I don't think I've ever read a single piece of yours that wasn't top notch.
I try to act out your advice and will try even harder. When something hasn't been working lately, I've had a stab at something different, which is quite fun.
A great essay which probably 90 percent of us should pin on our wall.
Yours,
Sal

Oh, Sal, thank you so much. Do I ever write crap? I have a compost heap in my backyard that generates enough heat to keep my neighborhood warm all winter. But then, there is the smell in the summer.
I do the same thing, Sally. When one horse gets bogged down, I jump on another.
Thanks for your very appropriate comments.

    Peace, Lee
