What a auperb tribute to a loved one -granpa. The reader can almost feel the emotion of love in the lines throughout. It is simply compelling.Life was physically tough then but not so tough as not to be able to appreciate the finer things in life 'an ice cream cone'.

Tough crocodile fingers
delicately held my hand
on the way for an ice cream cone

Loved these lines. Each of us (the lucky ones, at least) have our own special memory of our grandfathers. Both my grandpas passed away several years ago. My paternal grandpa was an automobile engineer and my fondest memories of him are the times that he would spend with me, asking me riddles and giving me complex mathematics puzzles to solve or cracking really poor jokes (Why was the chicken sick? Because it had people pox!)
Both my grandmothers are terrific cooks (Aren't all grandmas the same? Maybe they have to pass a culinary exam to become grandmas!!)

I really like this excellent little bit of descriptive writing, brilliant imagery and contrast of texture and design, make a great short story. However, the first line's weak--leather hands doesn't stand up metaphorically--maybe, leathered, or some other adverb or adjective to assist and prop it. (His hands like leather) Kenny

Thanks, cvcopac! I appreciate your kind review, and the gift of stars. I'll look at that line again, but I have received 3 six-star reviews so far.

I'm not here to argue, especially with stars--of any kind. I truly like your verse; I just don't see leather hands as anything other than a vague and too general image.

I love the poem and the image of the grandfathers hands, so strong, you describe them so well using fantastic wording. then the ice cream summed it all up as a wonderful piece of poetry.

Well done. Mary

Oh this is lovely. I look back at my father's hands, (they were similar to the ones in the picture,) and think up the work he used to do with them. Hard hands from hard work but it didn't mean he didn't have a soft heart for his grandchild. beautiful sentiments, Giddy

Reminds me of my dad's hands, Kimbob. Excellent similes throughout your wonderful poem. I especially like "palms cold and fissured as the surface of Mars"! Then the contrast of "Tough crocodile fingers" holding your hand on the way for an ice cream cone! My dad was an auto mechanic and his hands were so tough he would first wash them off in gasoline (good thing he didn't smoke!) then use a wire brush and pumice on them but still they would not come clean! Excellent imagery and a pleasure to read, as always.
All the best,
Rodger

Very powerful words here to describe grandfather's hands. "Leather, nails hard as horse's hooves, crocodile fingers. They give such a vivid description and make such a contrast with the "delicately held my hand." It adds up to a loving picture of a hard-working man who cared about his grandson. Could have been my grandfather, a carpenter. judi

What a glorious tribute to your grandfather. Your descriptions are so vivid: leather hands/horse's hooves
Palms cold and fissured
as the surface of Mars, Tough crocodile fingers

And then your transition from this huge strength to holding your hand. Lovely! Caroline

Wonderful pairing of photo and poem
good alliteration in horse's hooves and a powerful simile, too
excellent descriptive detail of his hands cold and fissured - reminds me so much of my own father's hands
great comparison of the hands to the surface of Mars
another compelling comparison to crocodile hid
I just love the way you contrast the details that make the hands sound touch and leathery with the wonderful act of holding hands so delicately with a grandchild :-) That is exactly the way I remember my relationship with my dad and his workman's hands :-) Brooke

This is just touching. I loved my Granddad too and my Dad was the best. The thing I remember so well was looking and holding my Dad's hand the night he died and I knew then the body is just a shell.

This is perfect, what poetry is all about. Well done.

Thanks, Kingsrookviii. I have to say, it sure is nice to see all these shining stars! I really appreciate your kind review, and the generous rating. You know, I held my mother's hand while she passed away, and I have never been back to her grave because she isn't there.
