What more could I say about this salt of the earth poem that hasn't already been expressed? I think we all long for simpler times... those days when things actually made sense.

People that work the land are the salt of the earth. They know hard work and heartbreak and how to carry on. You have it a nutshell in your final line, "how not to complicate simplicity". You have an enviable facility for telling a story in verse that is as uncomplicated and as easy flowing as natural speech .

I so agree, my friend, as those are 'my people' on both sides of the family. I really appreciate your kind words, Tony. It means a lot coming from you.

Hi David, your poem has touched my heart.
I always thought that one of the most noble professions was farming. The farmer knows the benefits of honest labor. From a farmer to a poet, I can't think of anything better!

I like this one too. Very nice. Simple and elegant at the same time. The theme here might very well be forgotten.

Good Writing,

Larry

not to complicate simplicity = after reading this line, I realized why I enjoy your writing; Even when not truly simple, all of your work that I have read, have a very simple feel to them, which makes them extremely easy to read and follow, and you message comes through loud and clear (if that makes any since).

Sounds like a very memorable childhood, I almost feel like I was there. I really enjoyed reading and reviewing this piece, thanks for sharing.

nice write...

Oh that's very well done. Love the rhyme scheme and how easily this one just flows. I really love this one, I think it is probably one of the best I've read from you and that is a lot of reading. Very good job, David.

Awww, that's really sweet, my friend. Thank you for that sixer. I'm a little surprised, actually, as this one didn't resonate with me as much as many of them do. So glad you liked it that much.

Maybe it's the agriculture girl in me. Working with farmers and all, but I REALLY LIKED THIS ONE.

Hi, David.

It is so refreshing to write about our memories, whether good or bad.
I've never been to the rural parts of my country, but some of my friends have experienced it and recommend to have a trip to any oh those place.
Your descriptions just take one there. It is poetically sound, as always.
I enjoyed reading this

There's a cooking show, The Pioneer Woman, this poem reminds me of her show, except... they rustle cows. The Carolina's has great soil for farming. That is a lovely poem. Nice work.

I don't know how you manage to do this. This is in a conversational tone all the way through. There isn't an awkward phrase or a word that sounds like you wouldn't use it in ordinary conversation. Yet, it flows and rhymes perfectly and is technically flawless. The content is wonderful. You set the tone right away. I love that closing couplet in the first stanza. Oh my, does that ever capture a time, place and way of life. Great piece, mikey

Good for you, Dave. I love the feel of your poem here. It reminds me of the way I was raised too.

Especially these lines, my friend:

"In digging up potatoes in a field,

tobacco curing like a junior farmer,

assisting with the season's meager yield,

and donning overalls (like denim armor),

I learned the benefits of honest labor,

dirt on the hands, and helping out a neighbor"

All so important and helped us in our adult lives for sure. Bravo! Great job. Bob
