I found this to be an interesting read. Actually it ended too abruptly for me ... I wanted more. I have no experience with self-publishing and have often wondered if the return, after deducting expenses, was even worth the substantial effort required. I suspect that there are many others on this site that are similarly situated. You might consider writing a more detailed piece when you publish your 'rabbit hole' story. I would certainly be interested in reading a blow by blow account of your experience in doing so. I'm not suggesting a 'rant' but rather an unbiased description of what you had to do to make your dream a reality.

Just a suggestion.

That is actually a great idea. I have used Booktango twice and until my recent problem, I have found the to be a service friendly site. I'll keep you suggestion in mind when it comes time to publish my new book.

This was a wonderful write and most informative as well as
the publishing company that did my book lost my paper work
more than twice and I had to resend it a lot of times although I let them do the editing and yes I paid for it but
I always have a lot going on in my mind that I can not concentrate long enough to do that kind of stuff....I remember the George Burns show it was a favorite of my family along with Jack Power and Jack Benny....lol....Cranial Thinker

Booktango is actually a great company and despite the current problem I am having, I would recommend them to anyone. I am pleased you found this informative and helpful. Thanks for the lovely 6 stars too.

I have to admit, I've had a pretty good time with Amazon. Admittedly, the formatting was horrible first time round but I discovered quickly the secret was to download the Createspace template in the book size I wanted, then paste my book (one chapter at a time) into it.

The real fun starts if you want to publish on Google, iBooks, Barnes & Noble, Nook, Kindle AND paperback, since they all want the book formatted slightly differently and presented as a different type of file.

It took me weeks to get Warped into shape and it was exhausting!

Every bit of indy-publishing advice I read says hiring a pro editor is essential, but that costs in the thousands for a full length novel. Most formatters charge $150 minimum to get a book into the right formats with no editing included. I've even considered setting myself up as one, now I have several books' experience.

I've not had any trouble with titles on Createspace, although it was a bit baffling first time.

If you do want some help, please let me know - you have my email :-).

Mike

I plan to publish The Truth About Rabbit Holes and may just take you up on your offer. I do want both paperback and e-book. I like Booktango for the e-book. thanks for the offer. I'll let you know when I am ready.

You're more than welcome, my friend. I can certainly help with the paperback formatting.

Good write, Sasha.

It can be tricky to format an e-book.

Hope you get it all sorted and out there soon! Keep us posted.

The hard part is getting rid of all the page breaks and paragraphs in the original manuscript. Adding illustrations can occasionally screw it up too. That's why I went ahead and paid the darn $49 so they would do the final formatting for me. I am sure they will have it all sorted out by Monday or Tuesday. Then it takes a week or two to deliver it to all the sites that sell e-books. I'll keep everyone posted.

You are a gem. The time and consideration that you took to offer this advice is much appreciated as I've been wondering how the whole getting the book published thing was going to work. I'm a newbie at this even though it wouldn't appear so since I knew exactly what you were talking about with "Goodnight, Gracie".

I am so pleased you liked this one and found it informative. Despite my tantrum, I actually like Booktango. They are definitely user friendly and eager to help without pushing their packages (formatting, editing, marketing, ect.) on you. I wish you luck (cause that's what it taks) in finding a publisher. I've used Booktango twice and been very happy with them.

Hi, Smurphgirl.
This is a very helpful and informative look at self publishing. I feel for all you've gone through, and can easily see myself in the same boat. Good for you to move forward. This is a huge step. It will feel amazing once you see your book as a published e-book. Best of luck!!!
Bye
Rosalyne :)

I am sure they will have it all sorted out by Monday. I actually like Booktango and find them more than user friendly. My problem is I am not computer savvy...sad but true.

reply by Rosalyne on 22-Jun-2014
I'm the same. My computer skills suck. I drive my kids crazy with questions and needing help. LOL
    Have a great Sunday! :)

Despite my temper tantrum, Booktango.com is really very service friendly. They are quite helpful and I have used them twice before and been very pleased with their service. I actually do recommend them, just stay away from Amazon...they really are terrible. Check Booktango out, they may be just what you are looking for.

how does ebook work you have to have pay pal to get paid though right?
Didn't someone bust into that once?
I wouldn't know how to get the money out anyway...

reply by the author on 22-Jun-2014
No, they send you a royalty check. I prefer PayPal since I live in Mexico and cashing checks from a foreign country is very difficult.

reply by freepass on 22-Jun-2014
They send you a ck hmm sounds good for me I didn't want pay pal!

reply by the author on 22-Jun-2014
I like Pay Pal...I haven't heard about them being hacked and besides, they have a guarantee that your money is safe.

Amazon takes almost 3/4's of the profits--I had no idea! I am sorry they are like working with a bad version of Evil Eddie!! I liked your "mosquito" simile (by the way, I didn't notice any spags in this post). "Goodnight Gracie"--hope the slimers don't return and your book will be successfully distributed by Booktango next week- Joan

No, the lumpy, green slimy critters didn't come back last night. I slept very well and woke feeling a lot better. I guess venting was the thing to do...I am sure Booktango will come through and I'll have my book ready soon.

Yes, writing can be very therapeutic. Good bye slimy--hello publication! Sleep well through the new week- Joan

An informative write full of passion and fury as Macbeth would have said. I guess you have to spend money to make money. Self-publishing is at a disadvantage here. To be honest, I would not spend more than ten dollars for a book written by an unknown. But then, I don't buy anything but reference books anymore. The library is my source.

Thanks for the heads up. I will have to check out Booktango. Your author notes are hilarious. I can feel the frustration. Hope all turns out well in no time.
