Ah, Young love. My 16 year old grandson is going through this. Some teen age girls can be so thoughtless. LOL Well done. Love the English accent, Steve. Well done.

Hi, Nancy. Looks like you've been poking around in my portfolio. Be careful! You never know what you may find in there!

In any case, many thanks for the review. Yes there is some sadness here at the naivete of young love and it's interesting you make the connection to your grandson. A broken heart at that age is perhaps more recoverable...

Your sonnet touched my heart . You did a wonderful job telling the story of the tree's life. My favorite in this book is "Abandoned." Well done my friend. Nancy:)

    Thanks again, Nancy.

As I remember this was the first time I won a site contest on FanStory, so gave me a real boost that I could write a serious poem that works on different levels. Did you get the nod to euthanasia? Our government is conducting a referendum on that in September in conjunction with our General Election. I suspect it will be well-supported and possibly pass into law in some form next year...

That is one beautiful poem Steve its worth all the accolades you have received for it This should be a shoe in to win any valentine poem contest. I really enjoyed reading it. I wish I had a six left. The flow is perfect.

Hi, Dip. Where did you dig this one up from - it dates back to the valentine's Contest two years ago - and no, no prizes in sight. No 'surprize' either! It's going in my book, though. I'm lurching through the self-publishing process now.

Wow, utterly astounding but you must know that. This reminds me so much of Edgar Allen Poe's The Raven, it is such a difficult rhyme to pull of yet you have done it in spades this is superb and reminiscent of my favourite poem, well done, superb! meia x

    Thanks, Meia

I remember being disappointed at only placing second in the contest with this. And walking away with a profound respect for Poe's genius! I did enjoy the challenge, but I'm not too sure I would tackle it again.

You did an absolutely amazing job, this was a superb poem wirthy of Poe at it's best. Did you some second to Dean? Just guessing as he is big on Poe...I cannot even begin to think of being able to stick to that rhyme scheme, I think Dean would agree it was a winner, such a perfect write.meia :)

reply by the author on 14-Jan-2017
No, the contest wasn't anything to do with Poe, or even with horror, necessarily - it just had to be inspired by the picture.

The winner was the much-loved Adewpearl who has since had to retire from the site due to health issues. She was for a number of years Queen of poetry here - prolific and consistently excellent across all genres and forms. if I ever managed to beat her in a contest, I knew for sure I'd done a pretty darn good job!

I think her portfolio is still open if you feel like a peek. Just checked - you have to actually search for her name, since she's off the active member list now. Anyway, here's a link to her poem that beat mine. As usual, i think mine should have won!

Congrats on winning the Faith poetry contest, Steve. Your form is excellent in this villanelle, even though you have taken some slight liberties in the repeating lines. Your honor in this contest is well deserved.

Thanks, Kim. I've noticed outside of FanStory, poets take liberties with the strict form all the time.

Romeo and Juliet take on Halloween. The cadence in this poem reminds me of Edgar Allen Poe and his Raven. Did the young man take his new Love's life? I reread it and cannot be sure. In any case, I enjoyed reading.

    Thanks, Ira.

Yes, I wrote this some time ago and deliberately set out to emulate the rhyme scheme and stanza structure of 'The Raven.' Didn't take me long to realise what a genius Poe was!

Ending deliberately a bit ambiguous too - was he guilty or not - who can say?

I surmise the antagonist has murdered a girl he met through drug usage of which he remembered little.
I hope I am on track.
You wrote this well. I wondered about ''ne'er'' instead of 'never' for the work did not bear the character of more the same. Yet, credit where due for it was lyrical and captivating as to where the story would lead. Well thought out, thought through and delivered.
Good luck in the competition.

Ray, thanks for the great review and the six stars.

Did he murder the girl? Well, that's open to interpretation...

I was trying to channel Poe to some extent - the rhyme scheme and stanza structure is borrowed from his "Raven".

This is a fantastic poem. The rhythm and rhyme are spot on. The internal rhymes are amazing.

I don't think there's must left for me to say except this is tremendously good. 8-)

This poetic verse reminds me a lot of the style of Edgar Allan Poe, it has the rhythm of his Annabelle Lee. Very well done and reads smoothly.

You sir are a genius and you give lie to any credibility the ratings system claims. If there are thirty better poets than you on Fanstory I'll run naked around Times Square. Not an attractive thought I assure you.
There is only one other poet I'd rate near to you and that is I Am Cat.
Another great example of good poetry

Well, Bob, I certainly wouldn't want to see you arrested for exposing yourself in Times Square. I'll see what I can do to climb back within the top twenty!

I was trying to channel Poe with this - the rhyme scheme and stanza structure is borrowed from his "Raven". Now he WAS a genius!
