This a heart warming tribute to your daughter. Having worked with these children in Special Olympics, I agree they are the most "up" persons to love. They love unconditionally and their spirits are contagious. The term "Down" is a misnomer for sure. Thank you for sharing this poem and commend you for the bravery to voice what everyone should be aware of. Differences should be celebrated as they make life more precious. The picture is beautiful! You are blessed.
Blessings,
Brigitte

Hi Brigitte, Thank you for your kind words and five star rating of my poem. I'm happy to read you were a Special Olympics coach too. It was such a rewarding experience, I certainly got more than I gave. I certainly feel blessed!

Wonderful, happy, grateful thoughts expressed here; raise your glasses high to this amazing young lady! And to the lucky man, her Dad, who wrote this heart-felt upbeat poem in celebration of his daughter. Oh, how we frolic and dance before God Almighty for giving us ALL kinds of people and how we are able to pray for one another. I LOVED it! Just as the love flowed through this one, I caught some of it for myself. GoodHearted Woman

Hi GoodHeartedWoman! Thank you very very much for your kind words in reviewing my poem and your generous rating. I'm glad you caught the spirit too! Our journey to Ireland in 2003 to be with and watch Amanda compete was one of the best times I have had or will ever have. It was so spiritually uplifting, I find it hard to describe in words. If every corner of the world was like that and everyone could see these special souls try their darnedest to do their best, the world would be a very different place!

Thanks again, I appreciate your review for just two cents.
    All the best!

Thank you! I have also been blessed with a son from the "same planet" as your daughter. He is a blessing indeed and one that gives us something to smile about everyday. The tenth of my 11 children, I know we are all touched by his life. And now, we watch as his three nephews are enthralled with him and smile and laugh everytime they see him.

You have expressed well, the up side of downs! A poem that is a joy to read.

    Hi Mama Fish,
Thank you very much for your wonderful review and five stars! I love your "same planet" description. That must be one great planet! I find the way my daughter makes me feel to be very difficult to put into words but I'm glad you can relate to my poem.
Wow 11 kids, you're a very busy mom!
    Thank you and God Bless

Hello susanjohn and welcome to Fanstory! Thank you very much for going back through my portfolio and reviewing one of the poems written for my daughter. She is so grateful to me for being her stepdad, she tells me every day! She's loving, kind, considerate, helpful and funny, and of course very cute too! Just a pleasure to be around. I can never understand why some people hold back when meeting her for the first time. I'm glad you liked my poem and thank you once again for reviewing my poem, not many members would do that for just a two cent reward!

    Good luck here at FS
    All the best,Rodger

What a wonderful surprise! I appreciate your kind words and six stars for my poem. My daugher makes poetry easy to write .I do consider her a gift from God, especially since she is technically my step-daughter. To me she IS and will always be my daughter. She has taught me much more than I will ever teach her. Bless you and all the best to you too!' Rodger

The poem expresses the deep love the author has for his daughter, as a matter of fact, for all the children who have been not defined as 'normal'. The essence of living is shared anyway but with some special needs sometimes. The human spirit is live and brightly displayed in their activities and a willingness to express themselves in various activities and creative expose. It is the obligation of 'normal' to accept and treasure all human beings as precious creation.

Rodger,
I'm smiling at that beautiful smile.
I've known a few Down's souls... they are ALL so full of
the most beautiful spirit... Giving love freely and have such
a gorgeous countenance on their faces. When my son was
very young... two or so, the woman who kept him while I
worked a few days a week (for two years or so) had an 18 year old
son who was so delightful. My son loved him. He was always just
go much fun and so good with Landon.
Whenever anyone is 'different', people stare.

I can feel the love...and also the distress in your words:

'Like looking at the cover of a book,
the children stare with wonder in their eyes.
But as her words invite a closer look,
they find a girl whose heart wears no disguise.'

also, the pride.

She's beautiful.. Just like her father.

    Good morning, my friend!
Isn't that picture great, taken by yours truly! hehe I found this piece to be one of my most challenging, trying to describe what I see in her face and that of the people see crosses paths with.
I agree that people born with DS seem to have a zest for life and new experiences that many of us others cannot seem to find.
When I'm around them I really don't need much more.

Thank for your wonderful compliments and comments. I'm glad you enjoyed my poem.

    All the best!

Excellent!! And VERY touching!! I am all too aware of the labels society places upon anyone who is in the least bit different. I gave birth to a baby girl in 1995 who had a cleft lip, cleft palate, and only part of her nose. These were just the external anomalies. She was also missing the midline of her brain and her kidneys and stomach was very, very tiny. She fought to live for 32 days and died the day she was discharged from the hospital...in my arms, on the way to church to be prayed for. It really broke my heart and I questioned God for years...Why? Even in those short 32 days though, I saw the nurses look at her differently in the NICU and parents visiting other NICU babies would stare and whisper. I was extremely protective but did not know how to handle it. It is not a blessing that she passed...if I could bring her back, I selfishly would. But I am also well aware of the HUGE obstacles she would have faced- medically and also in a very harsh, cruel world.
Maybe it was because of her that I began working with adults with disabilities. These included those with autism, down syndrome, and others with emotional or mental struggles. I was the most happiest and at peace when I was in their presence. They bring such joy! I applaud you for this beautiful tribute to your daughter and for sharing her beautiful picture. God bless you, her, and all His precious children who don't fit the perfect "mode" society has designed. :)

valerie, Thank you for sharing your story, it is very touching and sad to read but, my friend, you came through it all. I have always believed that God has a special place for your daughter and I have no doubt she is there. I have questioned and screamed at God many times but he never leaves me. I think to question can serve us to strengthen our beliefs. Society's standards are not mine or yours, and thank God for you and people like you who work with the world's special people. God bless you!
