Your daughter is beautiful :) You must be very proud of her. I have taught music to many students with 'down's syndrome'. They have been the most cheerful and 'huggable' people I've ever had the pleasure to work with.

I agree other children can be cruel, but so often it is just through fear and ignorance. Your poem is well written with a good rhyme scheme. I would capitalise the start of each line. best wishes Fiona

Hello fimarie78, My daughter loves to sing and dance. she'd love to record a CD some day! The last few years she has joined a theater group where all the actors are people with a mental disability, she loved it and it was inspiring to see her perform. When she gets together with her friends, they all want to dance. Thank you for sharing your experience and your very kind words.
    All the best, Rodger

Very well-written. I enjoyed your piece about your daughter. She sounds lovely.

You're right about the name of the syndrome. It should be changed.

What a beautiful tribute to your gifted and talented daughter Roger! When I was a middle school principal in Washington State, we were privileged to house all of the "special" needs programs in the district in our school, including for autistic children and babies through young adults, aged 17. We believed in inclusion and many of our children were very successfully mainstreamed into "regular" classrooms. We had several children with Downs and they were absolutely delightful, full of smiles and positive energy, and much beloved by everyone. I agree that it is a very misleading "label" for these children. I personally knew Eunice Shriver and ran one of her programs for schools. She was quite a character. Special Olympics is a gift to us all. Oh and BTW...your quatrains are executed extremely well! Great meter and rhyme. Thank you for sharing your beautiful daughter with us. Sue

    hi Sue!

Wow, you knew Eunice Shriver? that's fantastic! She would be Tim Shriver's mother? a lot of the Kennedy clan was at the road games in Ireland when we were there in 2003. In fact Bobby Kennedy Junior gave Amanda her medal, that was really cool! of course the tears were flowing day. The school district Amanda went to was similar to your school she has a wonderful teachers and administrators, she just loved school. she was also mainstreamed as much is possible and will often help those in her classroom who needed more assistance than she did.

She asked me one time, "dad, what is Down Syndrome?" I told her about the physical problems that most people with DS have (she has a pacemaker and artificial valve) and that she had the ability to teach other people about God's love with just her smile. Then she said "do all short people have Down syndrome? " I said no, but all people with down syndrome are shorter than most other people. She is 4 foot six and she wanted me to make her taller lol I said, I'm sorry dear, that's one thing I can't do for you. She said "that's okay, dad, I love you anyway"! It was one of many sweet moments I have been blessed with! Thank you, my friend for your wonderful review, and for sharing your story.

Hi Warren Rodgers. Nice to meet you. What a beautiful poem and I am so proud you have dedicated this to your daughter. I worked with many people who have Down's Syndrome over the years and can imagine the pure enjoyment you have in interacting with her. Their laughter is infectious, their joy in simple pleasures is to be applauded and they love all the best people this world has to offer. If any of my friends shied away from an individual, so did I. Loved the poem, alf

Hi alf collier! Nice to meet you too! My life has truly been blessed and enriched by Amanda and her late mother (my wife). I wonder sometimes what I did before they came into my life. They are so funny, all one has to do is put on some background music and soon they are up dancing, having a good time, enjoying the moment!
Thank you for your wonderful review!
    All the best, Rodger

I think this is a wonderful tribute to your daughter and to any one with Down's Syndrome. I have found that most people with Down's have the best outlook on life and smile a lot, good-natured, innocent, loving, caring and nice. Imagery of your poem comes through nicely. The meter is good I did not have to reread any line or stumble on any words. I do not have any comment or suggest on how to make this better. Enjoyable read.

What a wonderful tribute to your daughter Roger. I agree with you. The word down bring negative thoughts that hardly describe people with this syndrome. They are always smiling and cheerful. Very special people. Well said. Langdon's would be a better name for the syndrome. :<) Nancy

    Hi Nancy,
Thank you very much for your kind words. The name Down syndrome has undergone much debate in the past for that very reason, but its seems everyone still calls it the old name! Oh well, we know otherwise!

    all the best, Rodger :)

Hi Rebecca! Thank you very much for your kind words and extra star. Thankfully I see more smiles from people, who see her, than I do frowns. The little kids I think are more puzzled than anything but they quickly warm to her.
    Thanks again!
    All the best, Rodger

Your poem brought tears to my eyes, your pride in your wonderful daughter shines through every word. How lovely that she has achieved so much and is a flourishing young woman today. Excellent rhyming and wonderful message about being positive and looking beneath the surface to see the true beauty. I spotted an error, it is spelled, Down's Syndrome-I know you don't mind me pointing this out. A super picture to treasure. Faye

Hi Faye, Thank you very much for your wonderful words in reviewing my poem. I wondered about Down vs Down's too so I looked it up and found that either one is acceptable, according to a few websites, but Thank you! for pointing that out, I do appreciate your attention to detail.

    Al the best,

My hats off to you my anger for all the things you have achieved to think so many people though it would never be.
What a blessing God gave you, a angel who knows nothing about hate, only pure love.
Thank you for sharing,.

    Hi misscookie,
You are so right, I know I am blessed to be a part of Amanda's life and for that I am very grateful. Even when she has a moment where her anger rises, it's only a few minutes later she is saying how sorry she is and hugging me again!
Thank you for your wonderful words and generous rating,
    All the best,
    Rodger

What a beautiful tribute to your lovely daughter, whose heart is bigger than any label one could place upon her. God gave her the ability to overcome the world by instilling such a heart inside.

Very well written with perfect rhyme, flow, and message to the world.
