I really wish that they would just change the name from Down's Sydrome to something else as it has so many negative connotations and in no way described the outlook of those who have it. I had a cousin with Down's Syndrome and he was anything but down. That is so cool that your daughter carried the flag and won the golf event. You are a proud father- you should be- and it shows.

hello rb and thank you for your very kind words in reviewing my poem. You are right, individuals with down syndrome are some of the happiest and funniest people anyone could ever meet.
    All the best, Rodger

Exceptional Oh what a beautiful poem and an even more beautiful daughter! I'm sure she is a total joy to you and has been all her life. Years ago I worked with a disability workshop which had different types of reversals unfortunately and mistakenly called mental retardation. I was studying Mental Health and Alcoholism. I call them reversal situations There were many different stages of disability throughout the workshop. One young woman, about 20 with Downs syndrome ( I agree - call it by the prof's name). Her name was Dolores, in charge of the front desk, meeting and greeting guests and new members. She was dynamic in that role and in anything else she was given to lead. To this day, about 20 years later, she stands out and I'd love to be able to interact with her again. I pray the public will give Amanda (and you) the credit and recognition deserved. I commend you for posting this and giving all of us the opportunity to know your beautiful daughter. Thank you.

    hello Samsaysagain!
I like that term reversal situations. I'm always looking for a better name to call it that does not become derogatory so I often just called it DS. Thank you for sharing your story about Dolores, it's good to know that these special people are gradually being assimilated into the workforce and our society. I can only bring us more understanding of their condition and perhaps make us reflect on our condition as well. My daughter has much ability and a better attitude than most of us, including myself. thank you very much for your kind comments and very generous rating my poem.
    All the best, Rodger

How about "Up Syndrome?" These kids are not mentally ill, but just a little slow on the trigger. Your poem is very well written honoring the victims of the disease.

Your right what a wonderful smile. I love your poem it is a good idea to bring the positives into the light. We are all individuals and labels are unproductive to the human spirit.
I have worked with several happy souls with the Langdon's syndrome and they brightened my life considerably

    hello Emily,
thank you very much for your kind words and generous rating. I'm happy to know you've worked with these individuals as well because especially beginning is not easy for many parents. My daughter has a spirit that is hard to describe and I am blessed to have her in my life.

I agree that Langdon's Syndrome would be a much better name but I guess Dr. Down didn't want it that way, or whoever decided what it would be called.
I worked with children with disabilities many years ago. The "Downs Syndrome" children were the most loving and happy ones anyone would ever want to meet.

Wow, a true celebrity. How exciting that she is your daughter. You must be very proud. I met a lady one day who had a Down Syndrome child. She was talking to me about my own little two year old daughter and she told me she felt sorry for me because one day my daughter would grow up and go away (and she did), but that she had a "forever child", one she never had to give away to a young man, or watch turn into an ungrateful teen. She said she was blessed with her daughter, and it seems, you were, too.

ha ha She certainly believes she is a celebrity I can tell you that! thank you for sharing your story about the woman you met one time who had a down syndrome daughter. There is a lot of truth to what she says I experienced the same thing except now that she is nearly 30 he has gone to live with her aunt and grandmother for the time sort of testing her wings one might say. But she does come back every month stays for a few days or weeks so she gets many different experiences with those who love her. Thank you again I appreciate your review,
    all the best, Rodger

Always wondered why they call it 'Down Syndrome?' As you write they're pretty happy with a smile. Nice rhyming throughout. Your author notes were quite educational and interesting. Wonderfully written. Les

Bravo for this work. Many children who are aborted because the will have Downs. I have a friend whose son has downs. He is a high functioning person and a sheer delight to know. How people could miss out on such a thing as the joy the many downs children bring into their lives and the lives of those around. Blessings, Patricia

    hello Patricia,
thank you very much for your wonderful words and generous rating. I've never met someone with Down syndrome who I don't enjoy being around. I guess it's like the old saying to know them is to love them. Speaking of the abortion issue on my profile there is a video you click on from several years ago but you may enjoy watching it's only about 3 min. long down to the bottom of the page.
Thanks again and blessings to you as well
    Rodger

My aunt and uncle had 4 children and all four were severely disabled and my aunt was such a wonderful mother to those youngsters. I lived with them for about 5 months and I also saw such pure faith in the children. Puts my faith to shame.
