I suppose the writer expressed pretty well her points. The feelings embedded in the essay speak of her concerns and the impact entered in the mind of the reader. She wrote, her story, I suppose, with the purpose of informing her grandchildren some legacy that in the years ahead, when, probably she is gone, they will remember her more. Children at young age can not fully comprehend what may appear in the future, but tomorrow, long after their loved ones are gone, they will feel the difference.

One consideration to have the story shine is for the author to make the reader feel a sense of admiration, how she writes and make it explode in the imagination of the reader. I believe this essay pointed this out pretty well. Congratulations Ingrid. You write pretty well. Dom

I was very surprised to receive Story of the Month award for this as it was simply a chat to other writers after writing 100K words, but people seemed to appreciate the behind the scenes narration. Thanks fir the stars.

Glad to hear that. Keep on writing lady. I'll be looking forward to more, although, I feel I'm not so keen and active anymore due to my health. But I'm still alive and kicking. Dom

I am hoping to get my book published this year...Yikes! I'm no where near ready, well maybe I am, but you're right. You have to be able to lay it all out there with your heart for everyone to see. My story is a book of poems from my past and how I got here today. I was going to wait til certain people died but I'm done living my life around the ones who tried to ruin it. Instead I'll just take their names out. And it might even be cool if they could read it so they know they didn't destroy me. Great job with this and I hope there is another story in you somewhere, I know I fell behind at times but I loved it!

Well, I wrote the truth and Mac is still alive and could try to sue me, but it is only slander if it's a lie, and I have witnesses. Thanks and good luck with your book.

The journey you share is what separates the good writers from the exceptional. You don't leave certain things out, but you don't try to make it a cornerstone either. The undercurrent becomes the strong pull, invisible to the naked reader, pulling him along and under with nothing left to hide and no way to survive without seeing to the end. Thanks for the journey. Stan

Thank you for sharing your journey with us. It has been very instructive and informative for my project. Your advice on memoir writing is sound. My favorite line is that you wanted your grandchildren to understand you as a woman and not just as grandma. Two days ago I used similar wording when I wrote in my cover letter that I wanted to understand my mother as a woman and not just as my mother. I then submitted four of her poems to Rattle Magazine's special issue on Feminist Poets.

Thank you for the reviews and encouragement of my project. I wish you success for yours.

I have read many chapters of your story and always felt they were honest in their emotional content.
This post is a wonderful guide for those who may want to write a biography. It does sound like a daunting task that opens old wounds and demands honesty. Both are very hard to face when it comes to one's self.
You're braver than I could ever be to have accomplished you book.
Best of luck.

:) ellen

I'm, not so much brave as I think I have a story to tell. I'd like this to be more than a dormant file. Thanks.

Congratulations on completing your book. Some of the scenes could almost be visualized as from a movie, such as some of your meetings with Ivan. You were brave to write this because you revealed so much about yourself. You were right not to focus so much on your sisters, as that would have been a side issue. You were telling about your struggles and triumphs. There's something about the jewelry business that makes your story interesting. The competition and ups and downs of the business impacted you. Excellent epilogue here. judi

this is an excellent summary of the changes you made in your book for literary sake and put more of yourself into it after two years of sitting dormant. I wish you well with your venture and hope your grandchildren appreciate the gift you will give to them.

It is one of the many triumphs of this book that it is crystal clear throughout that it is, first and foremost, the epic, and continuing, story of the struggle of women, through the feminist movement, and by other means, to triumph over the blinkered, unjust, male-dominated world. It does this with passion and integrity. I am delighted that you intend to publish.

'Aside from the time, there is an enormous emotional investment in writing a memoir.' (This was particularly clear, and moving, to the reader in your book).

I have one, last suggestion to make for your editing process. I think it would be helpful to add to the list of characters, a list of the various companies you worked for and with, with a summary of the type of business each company carried out.

Three SPAGs. (Square brackets indicate suggested deletions, and asterisks, suggested insertions):

'and it *never* seems to [never] end' (Split infinitive).

'the reviewers (for which I remain humbly grateful for)' (This should either be 'the reviewers ([for which] *to whom* I remain humbly grateful [for]), or 'the review[er]s (for which I remain humbly grateful [for]').

'I did not want [to] continually *to* remind readers' (Split infinitive).

Adrian

Ingrid, it was an amazing journey, and sublimely satisfying in every way. I thank YOU for the honesty and integrity you showed in writing your story - for leading the way, and even now, as it's finished, for coming back to include those of us who might consider writing our own memoir. Once again the lantern you hold up lights the way.

This is yet another chapter I have no six for, but I think you know I think it is outstanding.
