I enjoyed this poem so much I had to read it more than twice so as not to miss one single word. It's like a painting, only with words. One of those poems that just roll off the tongue into a splendid, terrible picture. Excellent and I can only hope to write as good as you one day.

Thank you very much for reading, Riss Ryker518, and for the six stars as well.
Sorry for the delay in responding.
With my dad passing away recently I've fallen a bit behind.
It's not that I don't appreciate your input because I do.
It's just been a little crazy around here lately.
    Thanks so much again.

Such a sad poem. it had a good flow to it, each word seemed to belong making it easy to read from start to end with out drifting off.

Lord help us. Dean, you are a morbid soul! LoL! BUT so enjoyable to read, no matter how scary, dark, or creepy, your writing always amazes. Now, along with my demon Lab, these bells will creep me out each time I try to sleep. :) Congrats on this nomination too! Susan

Hi,
Simply incredible writing, little I could say to express how this made me feel...there was a crescendo, like one could feel in a musical piece, and the words were stinging, yet so effective...this poem clearly should be voted number one...for sure...this is indeed a world of contrasts, dinner plates filled with comfort food, and those of weakened children, their bellies swollen in hunger...what a world we are living in...Hades, is the common grave of all evil mankind, may they all rot, until nothing is left, nothing at all...

Thanks for sharing this with us...

Big Hugs,
Victoria

Thank you for your intelligent and insightful feedback, Victoria. I feel it's an honor simply to have my work included in such a talented group of poets. Whether or not the poem comes out on top and finishes first still remains to be seen. While it's nice when it happens, the more important thing is that the poem elicits emotions and feelings deep down inside the hearts of those who took the time and cared enough to read it. Good people, just like you.
Thank you for the six stars and good luck wishes. I sincerely hope you and your family have a very Merry Christmas.
    With gratitude & Hugs...
    ~Dean

Dean,

I missed this when you first posted it, so I am so glad it's been nominated for Poem of the Month so I had a second chance at it. I loved it -- and the repeated line about 'the bells, the bells' stays with the reader long after the reading is done. Great job!

Virtual six, instead! This is a wonderful chapter in your book. Nice progression, rhythm and flow as well as impressive imagery bell sound which enhances your chapter; and artwork within your chapter too... God Bless, Deb

Dean,

If there's a fifth Horseman of the Apocalypse missing from the collective revelry of this fray, then you are probably him. 'When a bell rings, an angel gets its wings. (NOT) In this case, when the bells toll, a waiting banshee sings.

Blessings,
Shane

Thank you very much for taking time out to read and comment on this one, Shane. You're absolutely correct. No angels in this belfry...not by a long shot.
I deeply appreciate your time and comments.

Ah yes, you've turned that classic line into a stunning reverie of sordid sound. The bells, the bells toll from the gates of Sheol. Very effective use of rhythm and rhyme, alliteration, enjambment, animation, and poetic imagery to carry the mood of dred. Excellent iambic flow. The repeated phrasing really created a sense of terrible tolling rolling in the dreary dusk of life.

Your poem gives Master Poe a run for his money. This is a fabulous poem meant to be read aloud. And those bells accompanying your words were quite impressive, making a very fearsome presentation. They reminded me of the bells I have heard resounding from the tower at Notre Dame - underlining the narrators dire situation.

The mechanics of this work is without flaw. A Terrible Toll is a six-star poem.

Blessings to you,
Linda
