So funny and equally emotionally fulfilling story of a labour. Reminded me of my labour of my second child which had gone on for 20 hours. It's exhausting. Anyway, I loved the humour. You have a knack of finding humour in unlikely situation. That's admirable talent. Thanks for sharing this.

This is hysterical. I could picture the characters in my mind they were so well scripted, totally through dialogue and inner thoughts.
Funny stuff! No suggestions here.
I am new to Fanstory. Is this a book? or script? Whatever it is, I love it.

Thanks so much for the kind words, the generous rating, and for digging back in the archives to find this one, I think I've written 15 of these "Scene" scripts now. They're fun to write and loosely (or sometimes not so loosely) based on real life. Every once in a while something will happen at home that provides fodder for one of these.

Well, Mark, I suppose for the good doctors sake it was a Godsend that Maggie had dilated to ten centimeters ( I've always wondered why we don't use inches for birthing terminology as we do for everything else. Weird...) the last time he entered the room. I'd also wager it was a good thing for you that Maggie was asleep when you sang the words to that most beloved song recorded by Canadian singer Paul Anka, with a backup assist from Odia Coates. You might have been wearing your balls for earrings otherwise, heh-heh.

Hey, I've said it once and I'll say it again. If I had to poop out something with a head nearly the size of a bowling ball, I'd get "fixed" so fast that heads would swim!

Another hilarious chapter, as usual.

~Dean :)

Mark, even with your silly puns, asides and songs...this is a lovely and touching story...my birthday is also 12- 2 (just a few years older, however, than your daughter)... I have not been writing...I am stalled trying to change my memoir to fiction...no other way to publish...too much liability the other way. I did re-up on fanStory so I could check-in on you and a few others,...who knows, I might get a whim now and then to write, but, for now, I am tutoring several students, playing tons of tennis, and enjoying my grand kids. Happy thanksgiving.

I didn't realize that there were liability issues in publishing a memoir - I wonder how the celebrities get away with it. Anyway, it's very good and I'm sure the quality will still come through in a fictionalized version.

What a cracking story. I was lost in it from the first. It's the way you tell 'em.

It was informative too. When my first wife had our three babies I was thousands of miles away on the other side of the world.

Duty called!

Even if I had been at home they wouldn't have let me near, not in the first half of the 1960s. Prospective dads were expected to pace up and down the corridors smoking endless cigarettes until the baby's wail announced his or her safe arrival.

With the 20 20 vision of hindsight, I know I'd have preferred it your way.

Hello :)

LOL this is so funny and true. Woman get really mad at the husband, well, some due. I didn't blame anyone. Giving birth is such a wonderful experience rewarded with a baby. Good job expressing the emotions of parents in labor and great characters. Well done!

Thanks - glad you got a laugh out of it. While I didn't mention it in the piece, my wife's sister was also present for most of the labor and delivery. It was great to have her as a buffer to keep my wife on her best behavior.

Laughing my ass off again! Childbirth stories are always great comedic fodder, and this is no exception.

Highlights:
Mike Didtka.
'You did this to me.'
'Tough it out, suck it up, play like a champion.'
'You can sing it to your next wife.'
'Honduran women don't have to fill out forms.'
'I HEARD THAT!'
'Next time (the doc) comes in, if he says I'm still at 2 cm, you have to kill him.'

Once again, an amazingly funny story. You rock the funny stories.
Rock on!

Thanks Michael. Never sure whether or not to label these as fiction or non-fiction as they are mostly true, but I do take a few liberties (e.g. Maggie did threaten divorce if I sang 'Havin' My Baby', but I didn't actually raise the bedpan over the doctor's head). In any case, I'm glad you get a laugh out of them, and I always appreciate your comments.

You did not end up actually singing it to her! You're vicious! In the most endearing and lovable way! I'd hate to hear that song in the delivery room, too! Another overwhelmingly funny chapter! With all the sport events, songs, and heartwarming little details woven into it! Just precious! You two make such a great team! You make me want to write a similar one about my own birthing experience, for a female perspective! Except, I am afraid of prose in English! (I might do it anyways...) Thank you for the fun read and the inspiration!

I really enjoyed the events leading up to the birth of your baby daughter. It caused me too revisit the events in mife's and my own experiences in the birth of our girls. Hilarious and expressively humour full event. This script is extremely well written Mark, you have a great sense of humour, and you don't take yourself too seriously, which is an asset. Well done, with this, it was well written, and most absorbing, well done, blessings, Roy
