Good luck with your plans for having your work published. You are worthy of it. Like you, my husband and I don't go out on New Year's Eve. (We used to, when we were capable of dancing.) I was really interested in your writing plans for the new year. You are a great reviewer. I receive some reviews that make me wonder if they've even read the work. You must have spent a lot of time reviewing. I think you have a point about reviewing pieces that aren't promoted. I can read several of those and still have not added much to my account. Are you keeping your resolutions? I see you're still up there at #8 reviewer. I don't know why anyone should be compelled to write X number of works each week, just write something good. Interesting writing, with great insights. Seize 2016! judi

Thanks, Judi. I'm keeping the resolutions about writing. Well, pretty much. I have about twenty submissions to magazines. Got one acceptance so far.

You're welcome. Good for you! Unfortunately, not as many magazines around that publish short stories as there used to be. judi

Dear Jay, I am crying now...you have touched a nerve, a connection, especially in your admitting that you were immortal until age seventy...I get it...I am facing that whole idea that "life is short", be happy at age 65. I am in awe of your diligence here on Fan Story. I appreciated your honest and helpful reviews. Whenever I received a six star from you, I knew I had a good piece...I earned it. Your six had weight, conversely, when I received a four and made the corrections you suggested, I made them and you changed the rating. You had/have integrity, thank you. Good luck with publishing...I have waded into that over the past year, and found that it is like the Wild West in publishing land...I still don't know which way to jump/spend time and money or go for it with an agent etc...

And I am proud of you, my friend. I second this emotion. I am also happy to be a Fanstorian, as you would have gathered, even though a couple of things could be improved, the advantages are many, yet must be realized from each persons perspective.

I am lucky to manage 15 reviews a day, mostly poems, as I review with thoughts of praising, helping and guiding the writer , if and when necessary. I also teach myself during this process.

Let us keep on with what we do...write...for it is who we are.

Good luck with the publishing, Jay...I think I have enough material to start the enquires.

Best wishes.
RG

Excellent essay and congratulations on your accomplishments and best of luck taking the next step! I shall fan you so I can observe and learn.

The essay flows logically and I see nothing wrong. (But I am not an essay specialist.) Enjoyed the humor.

I saw one typo:

Need quotation marks after San Antonio

Good luck on your writer's journey!

A wonderfully informative and honest post here, Jay. I realize my comments are late, but as you point out, FS reviewing takes time--gobs of it. I'm constantly behind.

I'm thrilled that you're seeking a publisher. And, you're right--it's a serious job. You're a very good writer and I think you have a decent chance achieving your publishing goal.

I think FS will continue to be a warm and fuzzy place for you. A good place to get pumped up should the sleddin' get rough.

And, New Year's Eve? The perfect night for writing!

Happy New Year to you too, Jay. I sincerely hope all your publishing dreams come true in 2016. You deserve it.

Marietta

Jay, I really wish I could be one of those meaty reviewers you mentioned in this post so I could count on your review of my writings but I'm a very inexperienced writer. With that said I like your post, you use words I don't normally see in writings like: nudging, hitherto, maudlin, bloomers. I love your comment about looking up Margaret's bloomers. And congrats on the second place for reviewing, that's an awesome trophy. I almost feel horrible pointing out the only item I caught since you are such a talented writer but here goes: there was one missed quotation mark in this sentence-"Down and Out in San Antonio.

Good luck with the book you are working on, before you get to involved with this project could you give me some advice on how to become a better reviewer? Is there an on-line class I could take? Any books on editing you could suggest reading? My New Year's Resolution is to be more active on FanStory but I have not had any college classes in writing, except a few I have taken on line. Maybe I should scroll way down to the end of postings and work with newer writers like myself. I get intimidated reviewing top ranked authors. Thank you for time in reading this reply, any advice on reviewing would be greatly appreciated.

The best advise I can give you, Kareau, is to always be honest with your reviews. And don't second guess yourself. There are far more people like yourself who are flying by the seat of their pants. The difference is you are honestly admitting your inexperienced. By saying not to second guess yourself I mean if something doesn't sound right in what you read, chances are it doesn't sound right in the ear of the writer either. Don't be afraid to say, "Hey, there's something about that sentence that doesn't ring true.

Oh, and a big piece of advise. Anything your review, paste it into a word document with the spell-check turned on. Any misspelling will come up underscored in red. Any grammatical error will have a squiggly green line under it.

Use Google a lot to answer your grammar questions.

Thanks for pointing out the missed quote mark. I'll take care of that right away.

I'll miss your reviews and reading your outstanding work, Jay, but I sure do wish you the best as you move forward to get your work into print. Please, please, please keep us informed how the process is moving along...especially when the book/books get in the hands of a publisher and get them published. I'll sure want to buy you! Best wishes to one of my favorite writers and favorite man here on FS.
Smiles always,
Karyn :-)

You have always been so sweet and so supportive, Karyn. Thank you so much. I will definitely pass on any successes or, gulp, failures. I'm sure there'll be a lot of the latter. Those editors just don't know yet who they're dealing with ... LOL! I mean LOL!

    THanks again!
