Thank you ann marie. I appreciate your great review and taking the time to read it. This form is particularly fun. I wish I'd had the chance to know Bessie Smith. I listened to her singing on YouTube. It was a thrill to actually hear her. Marilyn

An excellent photo of Bessy that complements your poem perfectly. I think even I might have heard of her. And so nice to see a wrapped refrain poem, not often on the side. She certainly is and sang blue. Best wishes for the contest.

I enjoyed your poem, made me smile a bit at the thought! I don't know why I always want to read "she's" as two syllables. Nothing wrong with it. I know it's only one, but the way I read kept making me stop on the sixth line.

Good Evening, Marilyn

Your arts background shines brightly with this well penned poem. This story-in-a-poem is both educational and delightful to read. I'm going to have to search for some of Bessie's jazz.

The stanzas are in fine form with mixed meter appropriately applied. The end rhymes are strong and true and work well. Your signature use of enjambment is most effective and adds to the flow of the read.

You've surely complied with the contest requirements of 'Shades of Blue.'

A wonderful poem, and good luck to you in the competition.

Ray

An interesting form. I had to read it several times to figure it out. Very well written and I enjoyed the history too. It's unfortunate she passed away so young. Good poetry, my friend~Debbie

Hi Debbie. When I read a new form I have to read it over a few times to figure it out, too. Several poets have written wrap refrain lately and I thought it would be fun to try it, and it is fun. Thank you for reading and reviewing.

A very beautiful tribute to Bessie. She must have impressed you very much. I never heard of her before. I will certainly go to you tube to listen to her singing. Good luck with the contest.

Hi Sandra. Thank you for reading and reviewing my poem about Bessie. Yes, I am impressed by her fame and talent. The YouTube recordings aren't the best sound quality due to them being done in 1920's and 1930's when technology wasn't anywhere near as good as it is today.

I will most certainly will look her up on You tube because I love Jazz. I just spent the weekend out in the desert listening to live jazz. I really enjoyed your well structured poem.

I lived in Idyllwild, CA for 12 years and DO miss the desert. We had a jazz concert there every year (and still do). Bessie singing on YouTube made my day just to hear her voice. The recordings back then were "tinny," nevertheless I loved hearing her. Thank you for your great review.

hey thanks for the education on such a great artist of the blues. Im a locer of many kinds of music, and for some reason never really found her music. youve enticed me to check her out. if there is one or two of her albums that transcend her others id be greatly appreciative if you pointed me the right way. great job on your poem. thanks

Hi DJ. She was a blues singer in the 1920's and 1930's (if you read my author's note). It was wonderful to hear her voice on YouTube although the recording equipment wasn't the best quality back then. Thank you for reading and reviewing my poem.

yeah I read your note, I guess I wasnt really thinking about how they really didnt make albums per se back then
