You like sticking your head over the parapet I think. I am only reviewing writers now that appreciate to learn. Tired of these inflated egos lapping up six stars for dreck, while the informative reviews get a curt 'thanks.' I read the reviews and see it happen time after time. I appreciate you, great little story.. heh heh, cheers, judester

Excellent work with this. I agree with you completely. I have been on the wrong end of several deeply offending reviews. I have a tough skin and just ignore them but some take the criticisms personally and a few have quit. We all need to be aware that our words can actually hurt someone and take the time to present our critiques with kindness and remember there is a real person on the other side of the post.

Regarding your notes, Dean - Tom doesn't have any staff and operates the site as a 'one man band' which he's admitted to several times in the forum.

I sometimes read reviews of your stuff, as I'm fascinated by the adoration you generate, so I'm sure your 'respect' comments must be regarding reviews of others' posts.

I, for example, am always respectful and have encouraged and I hope helped you a lot over the years, particularly with meter issues which you've improved greatly, though there are still a few here, with respect. ;-).

Cheers, Ray

Yes, you were once an encouragement to me, Ray, and I've not told anyone differently.
As for adoration, I simply treat others as I'd like to be treated. Nothing more.
I honestly was not aware that Tom operated FanStory by himself, sans staff. I thought I'd read in an interview on Pen & Proper magazine (online) that he employed a skeleton crew of a staff, including his wife who keeps the books.
Thank you for taking the time to read and comment.
    Take care,
    Dean

Hi Dean,
still trying to catch up but glad I came across this one. I like that you have chosen to a poem in story form. You have high-lighted a problem that has ruffled a few feathers here on FS. I am not qualified to voice an opinion on this but I know where my feelings lie, and if I am honest fears too. There are many reasons why I have considered my membership here. There are some really great people who have reached out and offered a helping hand when needed, and I have appreciated that , but there are also those that use their knowledge and status to belittle those less educated with no regard for understanding that we are all at different levels and are simply trying to learn. for every ten good reviews I receive one bad one without explanation can knock me back.
Your writing this post should be read by all on FS and taken on board. More patience, tolerance and help instead of harsh criticism would be more appreciated.
A great read.

Dean, this is so creative and voices an issue a lot of us Fanstorians are sad about. Indeed, the site has changed a ton since I joined it over a decade ago. Your poem captures the issues in cleverly rhymed, well timed line (though a few words have forced scansion if one wants strict iambs...but it reads smoothly as mixed meter or informal meter...and the musicality is richly textured, as usual, from you, which makes up for the tiny nits).

Very fine phonetics (as always!--not listing them--you know I noticed each nuance without my listing them all)

As usual, the presentation is outstanding, effective, imaginative and well done!

Just a few suggestions (based on prose rules of punctuation--which are optional, of course, in poetry, but recommended):

*

The village streets soon filled with beats from kettle drums, while those in seats,(NO COMMA)
sat silently to watch his show to learn what no one else would know.

*
was shared for all to hear and learn;(NO semicolon before parenthesis) (when wise words waft, our passions burn).

*
soon reared their vicious, ugly heads;(COMMA not ;) and spoke so loud, they woke the dead.

*All those who've sat so silently,(no comma) have nothing here to fear from me.

*

* scansion forced on the word OPEN here:

So, next time someone has the floor, open your hearts, please, I implore.

* Potent line! Note spag:

For(,) one day(,) you might have the floor, but you'll be shunned then shown the door.

*
Emotions spent, your message lost.-- So, isn't listening worth the cost?

either dash or period but not both.

Or, if you want a longer pause than a period, perhaps make it parenthetical?

Emotions spent, your message lost. (So, isn't listening worth the cost?)

Love that you wrote this, dear Dean.

Bless you!

Warm Smiles,
rd

Thanks as always, dear rama, for your in-depth breakdown and analysis of this poem.
I'll admit, punctuation is not my strong suit in some areas, However, I never like to exclude it all completely as I feel it adds so much to the overall flow of a poem if done properly.
I believe I've addressed all the issues you mentioned.
    Thanks so much again!

Happy to help. I agree--punctuation sculpts flow when used well! Big smiles, rd

Deano: This is a great piece of work and it's directed at a subject that we all can relate to - "reviews." The majority of reviewers try to be helpful and friendly, but regardless of that fact, there's always going to be a rotten egg or two in the basket. I recently won a Nonet contest that pertained to this subject, titled "Reviews." It wasn't nearly as elegant as your piece, but basically said the same thing with just a few choice words.

In my opinion, I truly believe that there are members that join Fanstory for only one purpose and that's to downgrade writers in any way they can (on purpose). It doesn't matter to them what your skill levels are, it's just a form of entertainment to them.

Hang in there buddy, they're just bullies and we need to kick the "shit" out of bullies in order to get their attention. I've been here eight years the lst of Jan and it's always been like this, it will never change. Just continue to do what you do so well and roll with the punches. Leaving is the only other choice we have. Happy Holidays and take care my friend....I love that music....Bill

Your morbid musings are right on. I think for the most part, people are respectful in their reviews but on the other hand there are some who are not only disrespectful but mean spirited.
You have stated your opinion in a clever and fun way with wonderful rhyme, internal rhyme, alliteration, enjambment and profound imagery.

There are a few authors, that I just don't understand or are not to my liking and I pass them by. No need to criticize when there are so many others to read.

There is so much good on this site. Many authors have helped me with their constructive comments and suggestions. I hope that we don't allow the few to rule the many.

Thank you for sharing your clever and creative take on Fanstoria - A magical, mystical place...sometimes.

Blessings
Janet

Wow! for the entire story in rhyme that takes you to another place while ending in what we, ourselves should be in our own lives. Your selections of art and video to be a part of this presentation were fantastic. It goes without saying that your rhyme rhythm and flow carries the reader expectantly from beginning to end. Thanks so much for the write. It takes me back to poets of the past of whom you wrote. Wow! again. Too bad there's not a 7 rating.

You make great points Dean, as always so elegantly. I like how you basically say, among other points, how we should listen more. Seems this whole world is filled with people who have MUCH to say , and nobody to REALLY hear it. (No matter what the subject) I'm as guilty in this as anyone. You point out nicely that we can ALL listen better, even if we dont agree. I'll just add the question : What's wrong with a conversation or thoughtful debate and civil discourse anyways?

There seems a great niche in the world for people who really want to listen. Because of the non- lucrativeness( is that a word?) of listening- and not just in the world of Fanstory dollars and pumps-( it seems to take a very special ego... or lack there of... the kind our Lord probably implores us to work towards) This niche, and ego "type" is one that I know that I struggle to fill and become. Anyways thanks for another awesome write. God surely Blesses.

I liked this story poem very much. It was not only well written and readable, but I felt you were saying something that really needs to be said. In fact, I wondered if you'd been reading my reviews lately. (Just kidding.) I have been here seven years and have only recently begun to ask myself why I stay. Who needs to be told "the writing was okay but I didn't like the video you attached so you get four stars for this." And that's one of the more polite examples... I've been accused and "down-starred" for "stealing ideas" from the reviewer's poem which I'd not even read and muted before I had a chance to see what she was talking about. I've been told I needed to either rewrite or leave out three stanzas of a poem because they were so poorly written and didn't even fit with the rest of the piece, even though many others thought it was six-star worthy. I could go on... It can be exceedingly discouraging, and that was never the purpose of FanStory, so thank you so much for speaking up and making us all aware of the importance of giving each writer at least the same respect we'd like to receive. Your little graphic knight with his slashing sword is so appropriate. I've felt pretty hacked up lately. ;") Thanks so much for writing this. I hope everyone reads it. I loved it.
