Thank you for the opportunity to read so many heartfelt stories within your message to Mathew. I personally felt connected to you, as you narrated to Mathew, how much he, his family and puppy have influenced you and your thoughts of Christmas. I am pleased you have been able to respond to another's poem and used your writing to allow the memories and experience to surface for the good. Perhaps time does heal and allow sadness to transition to celebration in good time.

You know, this would have been a fine entry for the potlatch challenge prose about aniimals. It is certainly an excellent entry for a Christmas (or shall we be PC and say Holiday story?) story contest.

Thanks. I think the actual contest is more important though, but then, it's becoming increasingly obvious to me that I might be totally wrong: socializing, or as the 'trendy' set call it, 'networking' is apparently where it's at.

Being focused on actually having something to 'network' about is far too serious for today's writer. You have to be 'out there', making friends.

Either that or I am kidding myself - I just don't have what it takes. (I am "always a bridesmaid, never a bride".)

The potlatch is an attempt to get past the system, the paying, in a lot of work reviewing, to post on the front page, where you get a disproportionate number of grab the money and run reviews. It failed, or was scotched, but
worked well enough to keep some members
doing the challenges, which are just prompts.
Mistakes are downplayed, no one is embarrassed by losing, it's informal, and it
gets your words read perhaps a few times more, member buck for member buck. Fanstory
is, after all, mainly a website for wannabes. Or a hobby for retired geezers like me. A fun kiddy pool where if you don't learn to swim, you at least shake your fear of getting wet.

Thanks - I have participated a few times. But I am writing; I never have stopped in four and half years here, and I am far too prolific to pay to get to the front page. I am on there (when I am) because my ratings brought me there.

But before you judge, you should read my latest posting. (LOL)

I am reviewing too - just not as much as I would like to, and not for a lot of ones who've grown discontented or disgusted with what's happened here and left, sadly - they were fabulously talented, but also encouraging, fair reviewers.

Personally, I am fed up with some of what's happening - newbies being recognized whom I have reliably corrected and assisted, and so on...

My latest posting is called, "Always A Bridesmaid, Never A Bride". 'Nuff said? LOL

I simply can't take this site seriously anymore.

I can't afford the time, even though I paid (recently) for two more years.

Oh so lovely though exceedingly sad. What is more emotional than children with their loving dogs. What a story to have been able to hold on to. Excellent and a winner for me. Very well told.

Awww, Dawn this is just so sad yet so sweet. The little boy who was obviously very ill had the joy of his retriever puppy. A bitter sweet Christmas story.
I thought that Christmas that my heart would break: I would delete the second that.
All the best. Ulla:)))

You know, it bothered me, that second "that" - LOL. But I was too much 'in the zone' to worry about it (as I'm sure you can imagine- it's a true story). Thanks, Ulla. Done. Much appreciated. :)

This is a wonderful, heart touching story, Dawn.
To give this little boy one of your puppies in his last year of life was a generous and caring thing to do.
I'm sure his family forever treasured Max, knowing what happiness he brought to their son and entire family.

Good luck in the contest.

Thanks very much, Ellen. Mathew's mom wrote exactly that; it was an easy choice to make, and I never expected to hear from her at all.

A very well-written heartfelt Christmas story. The best gifts are always the ones that come from the heart. I love Golden Retrievers myself. The best breed ever for human.

Sandra, thank you - I agree - Goldens are the most wonderful dog! This was one I needed to write. Bless you.

You have a heart of gold. Thanks you for sharing this story and what giving away one puppy to a boy with a special wish did for him, his family and for you.

Well written and touching. Best of luck in the contest.

This is such a deeply moving story that it brought tears to my eyes. I have know several children that were granted wishes by the Make a Wish Foundation. They do such a marvelous job to make so many children just a little happier. I am so pleased you were able to participate in this and have the beautiful memory of that lovely little boy. Excellent entry for this contest and I sincerely wish you all the best.
