Hi there, well written and well expressed. I'm only puzzled about on thing. No sour grapes mind you, but if you are going to leave the site, why are you so intent of winning? Which you incidentally did, and congratulation. I'm born curious. But to me it's a contradiction in terms. All the best. Ulla.:)))

I like competition and I always write to win. When they suddenly--really--turned every contest into a split-pot prize, I was pissed. Tom wanted more people to win, and my attitude was then let them earn the win. I stopped writing on this site--more or less--last October, and now, enter pretty much only site sponsored contests. To receive less than a third place when there are ties results in more promotional and entry money spent than a win. In my cynical mind, a third place win is a loss.

You'll see my rating fall every day, but I've opened up the ranks for the last three years. It's a game for me, but I already have two trophies. It's time to do something ,ore lucrative with my writing than compile it in FS files.

Here's the thing about ranks.I am one a few who can write on demand. There is no challenge beyond for writers who have reached a certain bar. Most of the people who were so helpful and generous are long gone. After 8 years on this site, I'm grateful but no longer inspired. Still confused? Thanks for the read.

reply by Ulla on 13-Jan-2017
No, I see what you mean. I've been on the site exactly two years, and I've learned a lot, and I'm still learning. Mind you, English is not my first language, but I still have this ambition of publishing one day, and in English. I know you're a great writer as I've been following your writing. All the best. Congrats, Ingrid, on your well-deserved win in this contest. You worked hard at it, and I appreciate you edits of my story. My performance went well last night.

What resonated for me in your closing posting for the contest was this observation:

"Don't judge the lowest writer on this totem pole as having a lesser ability than the winner. There are superb writers on this site that simply don't get recognized."

That is true. Sometimes I find the best writers at the bottom--writers who do not know the tricks of this site when it comes to promotion and building a fan base.

I also love your apt metaphor "of FS as a literary gymnasium, a place to explore genres, take chances and fund your groove."

I have grown on this site, too, and met a lot of fine writers like you. I will miss you when your membership expires in July. I express my appreciate for all you have done. Once again, congrats, and thank you for sharing your winning, clinching essay.

The competition became a challenge, a game, but since they split pots, most competitions on this site are not worth entering. It's been 8 years and a little ribbon and a pot that usually equals less than the invested promotional $ doesn't feed my inspiration. We have lost so many really good writers and many of the news ones just want their ego stroked. They have tantrums if I give them a real review and are not at all appreciative for help. It's turned me off, but that doesn't mean it doesn't work for others.

I hope your presentation went well--lots of applause, another currency that is actually gratifying. Thanks.

reply by Sis Cat on 13-Jan-2017
Yes, Ingrid, even when I get bad reviews on FS, it does not compare to being in front of a live audience. Most writers' work go no further than the cyber world. I am grateful I can share mine with the world outside of here.

My performance went well. Here is my video of it. Thanks for your help.

And your expectation came true! Congratulations. I hope now that the initial rush is over, people will get back to writing just for the sake of writing. I like your idea of reaching out and reading some posts that aren't high on the list. There are likely to be some gems there. Some people can't afford to pay to promote, and I don't know if it's worth the cost. Excellent comparision--FanStory sight as literary gymnasium. Experiment with new exercises in poetry, try out new genres, etc. I'm sure I'd continue writing, even if not on this site. Congratulations again. judi

I, for one, will miss your stories. I have enjoyed FS these past years because of writers like you. I haven't had the time to write and review like I once did due to work. I think you have another adventure story in you to grace the pages of your imagination and entertain us (me) . I debate on whether or not to continue on FS and since I will retire this year, I hopefully will have more time. Take care, my friend. You are one of the greatest.

By all means continue on FS, especially in the early years of your retirement. It's been three years since my retirement and it fills a very big void created by the sudden change in social contacts/ I wrote over 150 stories each year. Definitely a springboard and a launching pad for the rest of my life. I'm not gone yet. The lack of motivation for the more developed writers certainly forced me to ask myself what the hours I've invested, the addictive , offers--beyond the cherished relationships. I shelve my writing AFTER posting it for only those here. I need to create my own new challenges. Thanks for the continued support, the stars and the kind words.ingrid

My stars, my friend, I will be very sorry if you don't continue here on FS. It makes me sad when a friend doesn't continue with us or drops away. We feed off each other - especially off the good writers - of which you are definitely one. *smile* But I understand that sometimes people do seem to outgrow the site. I hate it, but it seems to be true. I would miss you a lot, though. --sad face--

This was cool!

Kind words, and I appreciate hearing them. It's been 8 years for me here, and I spend excessive amounts of time on the site and letting a lot of good writing sit in files with nothing but a FS post, I need to sort through and start a different direction where there's a bigger pay-off than the stars. The split pots totally pissed me off, and any suggestion I've ever made has been replied to with a two sentence dismissal. July is a long way off. Who knows> Maybe I'll change my mind. Thanks for the read, review and your thoughts. ingrid

Hi Ingrid,

If you leave in July you will be missed. I know we've both been here for a long while and it shows in the improvements we've both made in our skills. Your stories are clever and I'd miss the way you weave a tale. Maybe we'll be reading you on the Bestseller list instead. There is no SPAG and you've set yourself on the way for a contest win.

Good luck!

Kim

I haven't been writing here since October. FS decided to split pots for winners of member-sponsored stories to give EVERYONE a FAIR chance to be a winner. When I earned less in first place than third, I realized I was feeding my ego, and not doing anything with my writing. It took away the energy and desire to write on the site.U spend far too much time here and need to focus.

The members/teachers/mentors have been very good for me, for sure. Thanks for the read and review,

Yes, it's fun to win! Those who claim they don't care, lie. Lol! And I do agree, damn the fours. AND the threes too! But at least those reviews, with exceptions to the ones done in jealousy...help wake us up. I always love your candid words Ingrid. Best of luck in all you do. Always. Sure

Here it is. my last foolish competition--costs $60 to win $50--but who cares?I wanted to win and with a 200 point spread, I'm pretty sure I will. And then what? I don't feel the urge to write and I'm not at all sure I have anything to say. But I'll tell toy this, Sue, I knew how to win.

Well, we have to have some validity to life. Writing and such are just vehicles for us to ride as we go down the highway to hell. Lol! You did good Pilgrim! Hugs...

I enjoyed reading this. I agree--the winners are not always the best writers. Tho, I think you need bow to no one on this site. I enjoy writing. I was totally immersed in the last story I did, tho it was only 200 words. I didn't win but did truly have a splendid time writing the story. Good luck with your rankings.

I had a ball writing about Horace, the Christmas Moose. Did not expect to win and didn't care. It was a joyful experience. I won 2nd? Really how? It wasn't as much a reward as an astonishment. I wrote for me own pleasure. You understand...don't you? Thanks for the visit.

The only mistake I found in this excellent essay, Ingrid, was the statement that you might not renew your membership in July. That mistake would be four-worthy to be sure.

Seriously, though, I do understand. I don't know when mine renews. I think someone overlooked it, but when I get the notice from Tom, I'm going to sit down and investigate my options.

In case you do, or I do, let's pledge to keep contact through emails. I would hate to lose someone who has been so important to me here.

You remain one of my heroes and I have both your spirit and e-mail in my memory bank. I don't care if I win anymore. Does that make sense, Jay. I've never had a writer's ego, and perhaps, that is the reason I could always accept, learn and grow with good advice. You've been spectacular, investing and caring about me. I am sincerely grateful .I'm wasting my time--certainly not my friendships. It would be better if I didn't write at all than to write to a formula. I did this to prove--play--knowing I could open in first place--as I have for the last three or four years. It's a good business model and springboards writers into a new mind-set, but then it just becomes a diversion or an obsession. Maybe you'll edit for me when I become seriously serious about my books. Thank you--from the bottom of my heart.

I would be honored--truly honored--to play a small part in your progress as the great writer you can be.
