What a good-looking guy he was! I'm sure you were very proud of him. And though you don't tell us how you lost him, any death is hard. I'm sorry you had to go through that, but glad that, after 30-some-odd years, the healing has begun. He would be pleased. God bless!

Thank you. He died in a hunting accident. His first-year deer hunting. Time helps, but doesn't eliminate the pain.

Hi there, this was a tough story to read. I can't imagine having to write it. I do remember Roy's story from way back, reviewing your work.

Again my sympathies. I hesitate to offer suggestions knowing how tough this was for you to write. I offer them reluctantly:

of, Roy meant it as a joke because we were milking cows for a living, but he was also telling me he loved me. --> Roy meant it as a joke because we milked cows for a living; it was his way of telling me he loved me.

This was in the spring of 1985. I recall hanging the drawing on the refrigerator, and it was still there the day he died on November 31, 1985. --> Roy made the drawing on Valentine's Day 1985. It greeted me everyday affixed to the fridge with magnets. Roy died unexpectedly on November 31, less than a year later.

before Valentine's day 2017. It's like --> before Valentine's Day 2017. It's like

One last thing is the date, November 30th is the last day in that month.

Bless you, and I'm sure that was no coincidence. They have a way of letting us know they are near.

Thank you. The accident did happen on November 30th, the last day of hunting season. I will try to edit this now and take some of your suggestions. I haven't gone back and looked at it yet. It was very hard to write.

What a lovely story, well told and a brilliant tribute to your son. What pain this must have been to relive the precious memories. Bitter sweet, I'm sure. You are a brave soul to share you story. Writing can be so cathartic. I also think finding the things again although painful, was needed to help set you free of a heavy weight. I'm sure Roy would not want you to be this way.
Anyhow, a terrific write and some lovely little items that remind you of all his delightful ways. I keep lots of things that my little ones make as they will be lovely reminders of times gone by in years to come when I am in need of nostalgia LOL

Well written.
Cheers P

PS I am very sorry for your loss. Peace be with you. If you feel this is a sign, roll with it! Good luck.

Thank you, my friend. It was an extremely hard story to write but I felt better after I had the crying jag and wrote the story.

Excellent entry for a valentine story. My dog, Dog (everybody had one) was old and black, of a similar shape to Dog. He appeared in the yard one day. I didn't see any spags, but I was reading in relaxed mode...

Thank you. There probably are some mistakes because I didn't edit it yet. I need time to catch my breath after writing it. Thanks for the stars and the kind comments.

What a tearjerker! A nice story. Well written with much emotion.
Who can explain the timing? These things occur pretty often.
Save as many items as you can. If you don't save them, they'll be lost forever.
Thanks for sharing.
Marvin

Thank you, Marvin. I intend to save all the items in the box and will set them around the house now. I think I needed a closure that I never had all these years.

I remember you writing a bit about this in the past and I'm so sorry for that terrible loss. I think writing about it is a positive step.

You tackled a big job to get clean out your attic. It's emotionally draining to do that job. I find I can let go of stuff easier when I'm "fresh." As the day wears on and I tire, I go to the "get rid of pile" and start bringing everything back. For me the best way to do it is a little at a time. Sentimental mementos will probably never make it to the "get rid of pile." My kids can do it when I pass. How's that for procrastination?" Marilyn

Thanks, Bea. You're probably right, I like your idea. However, I have no other children to give these items to. I do have some favorite nieces and nephews, though.

Blessings on you. I enjoyed your wonderful non-fiction. Marilyn

This is a poignant Valentine story that moves nicely to a conclusion that is obviously very special to you. Well done.

We have all had painful memories brought back, and wounds reopened. You worded this posting especially well.

Thank you.

Hi there,

They say stranger things happen at sea, but not often. Who knows why these things surface when they do... they juts do. A good write, emotional and touching.

All the best

How lovely and sad. Death is such an awful partener to life and losing one's child must so horrible. Some people are plagued by death. Parents then a child or more. Pets that have been so loved. Frinds they are all tearing away little pieces of our hearts. May you gain a measure of peace. Regards Mabaker.

Knowing what my children mean to me, I can't fathom how you must feel. What courage to write about it.
I'll admit a few tears trickled down my face.
Your story really moved me.
