You're a gifted writer, but I can't help but point something out.
Trump's supporters do not care, for reasons you seem completely unaware.
Socialism vs Capitalism. That is the forest. Everything else are just the trees.
The point of view in question.

I know Trump's supporters don't see and don't care, and this essay was simply a POV. I'm not sure what you mean by capitalism and socialism being the forest. If the implication is that capitalism and social programs can't co-exist , I'd beg to differ. Look at Canada, The UK,, the Scandinavian counties and Australia. The US is one of the last countries in the civilized world that does not ensure all citizens have healthcare for their citizens, negotiated and supervised by the government not the insurance companies.

Most Trump supporters agree they want prosperity and healthcare. Homeland security is a huge issue, but it it fed by fear, and Trump uses that fear to his advantage. .I wish him success, but I hope that success is for the American and not for his grandiosity.

Thanks for reading. Let's hope Trump gets his act together and his cabinet proves to be a good advisory panel..

I fear you may have misunderstood my intention, which was give insight into how average Trump supporters think. I personally know quite a few of them.
To many Trump supporters, socialism in the U.S. has become too big for its britches, and must be taken down a peg or two. That is the bigger picture for many of them, as well as the core of their motives.
I'm fully aware that certain countries use higher degrees of socialism than what we find in the U.S. However, it's not a level playing field.
Like it or not, the world has always been, and will always be a very dangerous place, so we best be pragmatic. Lying to ourselves over such an important issue as 'evil intent of Man', will surely end in disaster.
The United States is in the unique position where it's protecting not just itself from nefarious forces in the world, but also western civilization itself, no matter the geography. This is wickedly expensive.
Places like Norway, or Denmark, or Sweden, they don't have to spend the lion share of their budgets on protection. Thus they're able to afford all sorts of neat, socialistic policies and programs. I should also note that these countries keep their businesses in the private sector, so that capitalism pays for their high end socialism.
Nothing is ever truly free, so it's an issue of what pays for it, capitalism, or socialism, or whatever.
America has basic socialism in the form of public schools, police and fire departments etc, but outside of that, we're hard pressed to afford any more socialism than what we already have.
If history teaches us anything, is that too much socialism will fail 100% of the time.
    I wish it were otherwise.
To me the issue is where we draw the line in the sand, and finally say, ?This is too much socialism, so we must back off, or risk our economy.?
If the U.S. wants to keep socialized medicine, we're going to need help affording it.

Yeah know, my friend, I sometimes think you have a better grasp of what is going on in American politics and the dangers of these goings on to the nation and the world than majority of Americans, or rather the Disunitedstatesmen. I know you fear coming misfortune with Canada's close proximity to the US. Even if not directly impact Canada could still catch a milder version of the malady that is Trump. Keep watch... Good details, well thought out, thought provoking essay....

Donya, trust me in this one thing; I don't want to be right. I am NOT posturing myself as someone who knows better. I am deeply concerned about what America is doing to itself. In an effort to defend their vote, many people refuse to look at the difference between a candidate and a world leader--including Trump. I'll never reach the die-hard supporters, but I'd like to offer encouragement to the frightened and doubtful. Canada is taking in frightened refugees who are walking across the border from Minnesota into Manitoba. I have no doubt we will extend our hand and be kind to all Americans. Trump does not define America. Hugs, ingrid

reply by Donya Quijote on 17-Feb-2017
Well, I might be among those refugees too someday. Someone needs to keep watch and believe me when I say I hope we are both wrong. There is "Danger, Will Robinson" and misfortune may soon be just around the corner. I can't believe someone can possibly dare to compare Trump to Moses. Read that one recently. Delusional for sure. I'm still shaking my head over that one. Should things really turn bad here, I hope Canada becomes somewhat more willing to let some Americans in. I know people are still looking into requirements for immigration. I have even taken a peek. These days are indeed scary... Sherbrooke (sp) was nice and I can do French....

reply by the author on 17-Feb-2017
I cN'T IAGINE Canada EVER--ever==TURNING HER BACK ON PEOPLE THAT NEED HELP. tHE TROUBLE WILL COME WHEN WE NEED TO DECIDE WHO NEEDS HELP THE MOST VULNERABLE?.THE REFUGEES? OR THE AMERICANS--WHO ARE NOT IN PERIL, BUT MUST VULERABLE?

I swear Canada will welcome the fall-outs from this crises. But who do we help first?

reply by Donya Quijote on 17-Feb-2017
I wish people could see other people no matter how different they be or seem as other human beings... Americans will need to suffer a bit before they learn the lesson of their folly...

Spiritual Echo: great reporting, advice and thoughts on the politics. We wanted
Bernie. Trump wanted to lock her (Hillary), up while Trump was shady. Now, we have real news and fake reporting? I think he insulted the Israel leader by his ego. God watches who honors Israel and blesses - Duet 38. Now, he gets good ratings. What is Trump doing for the country, the college students, the $15/hour rate. Our economy, insurance, and world peace are at stake. Yes, he rants and raves. My husband likes the CNN and works hard as a grocery manager, unloads trucks and stocks the stores. Trump is doing what? I think he should focus on making America Great and so much more. God bless. fylikeaneagle ***stars for you!***

It never occurred to antone? that Trump meant--make America Ftray again--for me? It was always about winning, being the most powerful man on Earth. I hope you get at least some of what he promised--I swear, but I have never had and still don't believe in this psychopath. It's all about him. Today's press conference was self-indulgent and a sad commentary for people that still want to believe. Thanks for the stars and the read. Stay alert. Bernie was delicious, sincere and wonderfully human. May he stay invested.

God watches us. Trump bragged about himself while talking to Israel leader. I know people think God desires Trump and teach the gov't a lesson...we need to pray and watch. We watched the CNN report about Trump today. So glad you spoke up about this. We have Korea celebrating and Russia with a ship outside of USA...prayers for USA are welcome...thanks. nancy

Hi there, I like your clear view of what is going on in the US and which ultimately affects the world. It's just beyond me what at best can be called a charlatan could be elected. Hitler did the same. Fooled the mass and created work to build his war machine. I would have thought Americans a bit more enlightened. Oh, I'm European by the way. Well written essay. All the best. Ulla;)))

Yes I know you're European. What country? I am Canadian. It is strange to watch, and I agree, the tactics are very much like Hitler. Americans have never been exposed to war and its atrocities,. They send their children off as a patriotic duty, but go to the moviexs and move about without the thought of bombs. My family came from Latvia to escape communism. The stories are living history through me. BUT, not all Americans are seduced by Trump. There is hope. Thanks for reading.

I'm Danish, lived many years in Britain and have now lived in Spain the last 15 years and that's where I will end my life. By blood I'm half American. Have a half brother outside Boston and we're quite close . Long story how I found that out. :)))

Yes, Ingrid. "Karma is a bitch." The turmoil and chaos around Trump's administration are distressing. You add to this his lack of truth and transparency. Although you are a Canadian, you write about American politics with clarity and insight. One essay from you provide more insight than a day's worth of CNN. It is ironic that Trump whines about leaks when his candidacy benefited from them. Keep writing, providing your keen eye on political events as they devolve.

I/m a political junkie, but being Canadian allows me to have a different filtration system to process what I see and hear. I am going to the doctor in an hour--N/C. I had two cataract surgeries over the last two years--N/C. I am not registered with any party and damn few Canadians are. I've voted both liberal and conservative depending on the candidate. It's a totally different mind set as far as social programs, including accepting our higher taxes. Trump, as you probably know from my previous writing, is an entertaining disaster and yet people feeling out of touch and desperate voted for a buffoon. What is happening now behind the scenes is worthy of a novel the length of War and Peace. Pence is a patsy, Flynn hated him. There's no question in my mind the real Trump campaign managers were Bannon and Putin. Watch your back and don't take anything at face value. HOWEVER, I do believe America has some very bright people. All is not lost. You will survive. When you see Republicans voting against Trumps nominees, the tide is turning--THIS EARLY. Be safe, Andre.

Ingrid,

A very well-written piece that I read and enjoyed. I think you have a clear picture on what is happening. I only noticed one 'nit':

1.) exhausted, there seemed, or (it) was presented in such a way,

Thanks!

But Hillary... Just kidding, that's the typical response of Trump supporters when confronted with the mountains of evidence that speak to his incompetence, immorality, and corruption. Your essay is well-written. We tend to try to make sense of new situations using our existing narratives, but the Trump phenomenon is unique - there has never been a president as unfit to hold the office, as blatant a liar, and as uninterested in even the appearance of ethics. I think that's why so many people use Hitler as an analogy - they're not implying that Trump has genocide in mind, only that Hitler's ascendancy - ignoring the facts and creating a false narrative out of whole cloth, appealing to the baser instincts of the majority by scapegoating minorities, attempting to discredit any press that disagrees with him, etc. - is analogous to Trump's ascendancy.

Anyway, sometimes the best response is to do what you've done here - keep shining the light on incontrovertible facts. Well done!

The key thing you pointed to was this phenomenon us not earily filtered through the average person's set of experiences and experience. Pathological liar, but people make excuses and CONTINUE to believe DT on the issue that affects them personally. I know exactly what you mean by the Hitler comparison. AH came to power through mass psychological manipulation, fed people what they needed to hear and slowly stole their hopes and lives for his own need--power.

My shock--really--was how many people could not see what was, to me, blatantly obvious. I've come to understand that many were so desperate, they were blinded. I'd like to think...BUT a real part of me still thinks there are idiots out there--borders notwithstanding.

    Thanks for reading.

I loathe our new President, Ingrid.
I feel he's every bit as dangerous and deranged mentally as was Adolf Hitler.
But why couldn't the majority of Americans see this? That's what troubles me most of all, not only about our nation but the quality and moral standards of her people.
Now, videos are currently circulating concerning Ivanka trump and her father's inappropriate groping of her.
Are the Christian coalitions outraged?
No, of course not.
They avoid the topic much like the Europeans avoided the Bubonic Plague in the 1300's.
I've served in our Armed Forces.
I've seen young men die for this country, right before my eyes.
Yet, I have never been so ashamed and embarrassed of America, or her people, than I am right now.

I understand exactly how you feel. I've spent a lot of time in the USA--all over--and had many business relationships with Americans that grew into deep friendships. I could not wrap my head around the people who voted for him. I him. I never wanted to be right, and I wasn't. I would have bet $100 he'd never be elected. Most are betting on a short term before DT implodes, but I no longer think I know anything. Thanks for reading.

Hi Ingrid,

Do any politicians do things in a transparent manner? (Yes, I'm cynical in that respect.) Your essay is well written. I only found one small edit:

by once again bring attention to his election results. (bringing)

Have a great day!

Transparency is such a general term. You're right, all leaders will part with information on a need-to-know basis. Jack Nicho;son's famous line--you can't handle the truth--comes to mind. In this one regard, I absolutely feel it in my bones that his business partnerships will contaminate his opinions and actions. However, what he displays is hard to handle. If he went back into job creation as the daily focus, he might get more slack. Thanks for reading.
