There are people that need help and places that need to be shut down. With stories like these that are presented for the public to read those places are found and those people helped. It is a wonderful story. It kinda brought a tear to my eye. Good job.

Congrats on your nomination. After reading this, it is more than earned. Wow, this may be better than the non-fiction you write that I totally adore. Great pictures you paint that bring all the senses to life. I care about this gal intensely and I'm totally drawn in and was from the first few lines. Yes, I'm familiar with places like this as well. I wish there weren't so many elements of truth as well. This is powerful work. Nope, I'm not surprised at all. :)) mike

I was a sous chef in a retirement community. Though I did not work directly with the residents, I saw some who I got attached to grow older and weaker. Their frailty was painful and eventually I tried not to get attached to the residents and stayed in the kitchen except when I had to do buffets. It breaks your heart.

The old woman had spent so long surrounded by silence her ears had shut down. (I didn't add commas to other sentences, it is up to the writers discretion, however, this one needs one. It read strange to me with out the pause.)

hugs Heidi

Thanks for catching that, I go back and fix it. Yes, it is emotionally difficult to see the conditions some of these patients are in. It just breaks my heart.

Hi, Sasha.
This writing is hard, crisp and clear. The woman's life in squalid care reminded me the best of life always has its misery. Then, after her savior spoke and she was rescued, I felt a good life is often no more than not being uncomfortable. Very thought provoking. My favorite sentence was, "Dried up from lack of use, her voice evaporated along with her hearing, sight, and almost all her memories."
BTW, what the best, most respected DIY novel publisher?
Thanks for the exceptional read!

Amazon Create Space has probably the most satisfied customers...I am not one of them. Most of what they offer is free, but if you have a question their answer is always, "If you purchase one of our packages, we will be happy to help you." My biggest problem with all self-publishing sites is marketing. I get lost in the world of social media which is primarily where you get your opportunity for sales. Without social media it is unlikely you will sell many books. Glad you liked this story and felt it deserved 6 stars. She was an incredible woman and I was truly blessed to have known her.

I appreciate the social conscience. I was relieved to read the pleasant outcome so far. I have heard about such as you have described. It seems to me that it
isn't just social awareness, although that is important. Thank you for posting

Thanks. Yes, many families are eager to find a place to put their loved one so they don't have to take the time and effort it requires to care for them. The quality of the place too often is not important.

This is well written, Sasha. It brings back bad memories of my grandmother at the nursing home. The staff usually stole the clothes of the residents.

Thanks. So many don't want to believe that places like this actually exist. They are very real and often get away with terrible things including abusing the residents.

This is good. You could send this to the AARP magazine.

Good sentences:
Rocking back and forth to a silent tune, the woman searched the deep recesses of her long forgotten memory for something that would tell her who she was, where she came from, and why no one cared about her :(. Not talking to her, the caretaker snapped at her fellow attendee, "Why do I always get the creepy old lady that pisses in her bed every night? Tomorrow, you get to clean up her mess. I refuse to do this anymore (I don't know why some people go for nurse's aides when they clearly are too selfish.)." Dried up from lack of use, her voice evaporated along with her hearing, sight, and almost all her memories.

The first convalescent home I put my father in was like this. I came to visit him at 2:30 in the afternoon -- it reeked of urine. The nurse's aides were changing the beds at that time -- in the afternoon!! They rammed six people into a room that was supposed to be two people. It was ludicrous.

Onto the next!

I find it amazing how many people just do not believe that places like this still exist. Despite numerous agencies try to monitor them, too many are run illegally and are under the grid. Thank you for your glowing comments and positive remarks. They mean a lot to me.

What a terrible existence, and sad to say - this actually goes on in some of the care homes - many have been shut-down.

The questions climbed on top of each other like a rapidly growing anthill, but no one responded. - a great line, Sasha --

all in all, a most impressive write,

boarded-up
long-forgotten
foul-smelling

Thanks for caching he spags, it seems my grammar check isn't working so well. Yes, many have been closed down but people would be shocked at how many still exist. I am trying to move past my rambles and start writing more short stories. Seems digging into my past is a good place to look.

This is the very reason I have no desire to live a long life. It's sad to think this is the reality for the poor or those who have no friends or blood relations to check on their condition. A skillful mix of narrative with stream of consciousness. My heart went out to this lady. To think, an inspection will change all this, and she believes it is heaven.

She was an amazing woman with the strength and heart of an ox. I will always remember her and the awesome effect she had on all of us. Some people may have been forgotten while they lived, but Sweetie will never be forgotten by those of us that got to know her. Thanks for the awesome 6 stars, I truly appreciate them.
