Great story, in perfect setting, to show one piece of the social/political backdrop of the time. I really gained a sense of the counter-culture movement and the small town reactions to the war and draft. A good glimpse into a coming of age experience in a young girl - SPMC

What a sumptuous feast of reading here - such exquisite language telling a tale of longing and youth and love and real life war and ...........a tapestry of life ...

I spent a few months in New Brunswick, Canada myself--until my Conscientious Objector status came through. I was treated with equal amounts of disdain and courtesy. I can't complain.

While I enjoyed your story, I have some minor quarrel with punctuation. Perhaps it's a style issue. But you have a fondness for beginning sentences with clauses. But no fondness for the commas that traditionally follow such clauses.

Just an observation.

Best of luck with SotM.

Peace, Lee

their dad's Chevys--since 'boys' and 'Chevys' are plural, I'm guessing their dads are too--dads'.

This is a terrific fictional memoir that touches on the exodus of young, draft-aged Americans protesting the Vietnam war by leaving the country to avoid the mandatory draft. A young girl's take on that situation and the nod to the multiple selves and other ideas from Hesse's novel, create an impact on the reader and the character in this piece.

As always, your prose thrills me from the first word, Gloria. Your description of those times is outstanding, and they took me back to those days of war and love. Well written, my friend, and Hesse came into my life at that time as well. Outstanding!
Smiles,
Karyn :-)

I like your piece, especially about Steppenwolf as it reminds me of my one time home in B C and my own encounters during the war. I was olderthan you by a ong shot;having
experienced moving from a remote and sheltered home in the mountains into a lively antiwar scene around the time of the Beatles, when I lived next to the Hollywood Bowl...I like your depiction because it brings these memories and makes it easy to respond.

Really nice work on this story, Gloria. I found myself captivated by this coming of age piece. The anguish of 'losing' a crush is something I can relate to all too well.

Take care,
Russell

I liked it. It cast my mind back to those days when the generation after WW2 and Korea were trying to fill their father's shoes; and yet had this conflict with respect to the righteousness of the war in Vietnam. TV and live reporting were largely to blame. Where previously ignorance was bliss (especially during the Great War) there was the opportunity to weigh the evidence and ask the question "Why are we doing this?
I was 19 in England at the time so the pressures were not so great to get involved, but it was constantly on the news. Thank you for this. BTW, have iif you like Herman Hess, have you read "All Quiet on the Western Front"? Great book.

I agree with you completely about TV and live reporting as being largely to "blame". But like you say in truth, war was always extreme nastiness we just never saw it streaming live into our living rooms. Is ignorance ever bliss? To some I guess. I haven't read All Quiet on the Western Front, but I most definitely will now.

Thank you so much for a lovely review. Much appreciated.

It certainly was one very unpopular war, and seemed to have morality doing somersaults. The disgraceful behaviour of some of the American public towards returning veterans was a case in point. It must have been very difficult for an eleven year old foreigner to understand I was a twenty eight year old foreigner and I couldn't get my head round it.

No kidding. The treatment of the veterans returning home was despicable, calling them baby killers and all kinds of other horribleness. Always great to hear from you friend, Jim.

    Appreciation,

    Gloria
