Dawn, this is a deep and meaningful written composition. It is very honest and seeps of regret, insecurities, sadness, and the need to be accepted...on the one hand. On the other, it gives a lesson in not compromising for less, not letting other peoples judgement change you and being firm in the belief of ones own self. This opened the door to see further into a soul that has learned the lessons of life the hard way but has not given up. ~DD

Hi dear Dawn,
Very wise and best advice shared from your past experiences of so much
trauma and heartache. Conveyed here in a most profound depth of
compassion and reality checks in between from so much confusion
and past depressions. Heartwarming to have you share this, and
update on positive changes since and continuing onward. Elated
to hear you have at last found a true 'soul mate dear! Long overdue,
but so dearly, direly deserved! Your courage and perseverance has
truly paid odd off, and now full delights ahead with your new chance
and at last, abiding happiness and fulfillment.
Thanks for sharing dear!
Love, blessings, Ronni

I can relate only too well to the situation you describe, where no matter how hard you try, nothing is ever good enough. Well, after 18 years, I decided myself that THAT wasn't good enough. Thankfully, I'm now just on eighteen years of being with someone who is totally different in every way. I can heartily recommend finding someone who accepts you for what you are, not what they want you to be.

I hope that you are able to set things right with this second person of whom you speak. It sounds like they are worthy.

Congratulations on having the strength to open yourself up and give us a glimpse into what "makes you tick". A very well-written piece.

Craig

I am impressed with your honesty. Honesty has been my downfall my entire life and I have no intention of changing that side of my personality. So be it, if I am alone. I have yet to find anyone I want to share my life with and doubt I ever will. Thanks so much for sharing this with us. You have given many a lot to think about.

Thank you for the courage to share your deepest feelings in this short story of your life, with the hope your words will keep others from making a similar mistake. I am sorry life has left some deep scars and hard lessons. But it appears you have learned from these experiences and will be true to yourself from here to eternity! Best wishes- Joan

Ah, it is what it is... I guess the past is always going to haunt us some, but the important thing is to keep looking forward and that's what I am trying to do now. I haven't always been completely in the wrong, either, but it rather a moot point now...Tanks much, my friend!

Not sure how it happened, but here I am, old and alone. I visit a lot of graves now and then. My father-in-law said his drinking was his business, but it brought misery to a half-dozen nice people. No one is an island, Donne said. Excellent post.

It's very true that no man is an island. I'm sorry to hear you are unhappy, and that father-in-law sounds as if he was also, but of course, in a much different way. I'm wishing you well, and hoping you find a way to enjoy your golden years.
I am alone too, save for my cat (although I don't think of my age as terribly old. LOL). I wrote this as part of a book of personal essays I will eventually put together - something to leave for future generations of family.
Thank you very much for your kind review. Blessings, my friend.

I like this piece because it is a clear cautionary tale. It is relateable to many people I think. I like the crisp honesty of the prose. Self examination is often uncomfortable. Thank you for sharing your work.

Thank you so much, Sandy. The history of my family is one that tells of disconnections, and I intend this for a book of personal essays to leave for future generations of family. You've honored me, and I appreciate you, my friend!

that all now I can't fill. (omit all)

I understand this completely, my friend. My openness and honesty has caused problems for me as well, but it is who I am, and a special part of me I wouldn't give up now for anything. I spent years playing the roles that society assigns us, mother, wife, daughter, employee etc, which people were comfortable with. I guess, who I really am makes some people uncomfortable. I have done my best to make amends without compromising the real me. Some people have accepted, others, not. I try and leave that as their problem, although I still do have moments I wonder. A very deep, self-searching write, my friend~Debbie

Thank you, Debbie - great to 'see' you, my friend! No - "all" is fine, and more definitive. But I appreciate that I can count on you for honest critique.

Life is supposed to about balance, but nobody ever told us how difficult it is to achieve.

The past leaves the scars that cause us to build walls. I have done much in my past that I wish I could undo, but all I can to is try to be kinder in the future also

hugs

Freda

I know this must have been hard to write and share with everyone. I hope it helped to get it out.

We can't change the past. We can only vow to do better in the future. The hardest thing to do is to forgive oneself for faults, shortcoming, etc. Everything is a lesson, and hopefully, we learn something.
