You are consciously or unconsciously using the Jack London writing style of the stream of consciousness whereby the speaker goes from one thought to the other, much like the storms which rage in all of our heads, including the readers of this article. My favorite writing of his is a short story called To Build A Fire. You actually can get it on line. If you want the link I can give it to you. I like the imagery this conjures up:" But the legends that we tell ourselves: the lies we so willingly gobble up and choose, with these facts only we could truly be our own biographer." This is well written.

I have read a good deal of Jack London, but any influence on this piece is unconscious. I have a specific style here that is more a parody of modern editorial pages, including the disorganized nonsense of on-line debates on topics neither side really knows very much about. I am well steeped in the history, but am taking a different approach in that I am collecting and analyzing the varying beliefs that people have had about government, freedom and one another throughout American and World History. It is about how ideologies have changed and the impact they have had on the world. Thank you for your comments.

We don't always have historians view Lance, we have eye witness accounts, especially what happened during WW2. As humans we often romanticise though and embellish the truth and I am well aware of that. I wish you luck with your venture and stay off the drink as this will not help your writing, he he he, love Dolly x

Eye witness accounts ultimately are shrouded by opinions. Since virtually everything that happened throughout WWII was horrible (and my and nearly every person's view) that keeps history from being flatly objective as in--what happened, not how it impacted survivors and the dead. These are necessary stories, but they do not articulate what happened. It is what happened with hindsight. Examples could include why and how the Nazis actually rose to power, which has been discussed--as an opinion--but the nuances and understanding of the real world issues that allowed frightened people to embrace tyranny are not problems that have gone away. Wait for the economy to collapse. See how quickly nations plead for a ruler to save them, regardless of who they decide to eliminate. Fear needs to be discussed. Cynicism. Mistrust. What forms these things in the first place. Without pinpointing these elements of social psychology--that is why history keeps repeating itself. We have stopped evolving.

An essay that is packed with a lot of thought provoking information. I had to read it through twice. I enjoy reading these essays, much more that fiction. Don

Thank you. This really is (I guess a somewhat rough draft--it has been edited quite a bit) the introduction to a book. The discussion of the way I am working on it is unfortunately quite true. I am so damn tired . . .

Of course(,) the cold and the rain often spoils this,

Fun it has been, this tabloid permeated civilization filled with gossip, conjecture, speculation and an endless list of contradictory facts. All the yelling and screaming. All the "Fuck you, Mom(s)." - wow! Superbly said!

You old motherfuckers and kids(,) too.

In fact(,) this is just Recording Editorial History.

So very true. Your writing issue cleanly conveyed and potent, as usual. I found just the few nits...nothing to detract a star for. What a very philosophically found piece of writing. Thanks for sharing another clean delineation of timely trials and misconception... To see things as they are, and not with blinders on, is a gift. To write it so fluidly, a treasure. You have it, Lance. Keep writing!
Janelle

Thank you for your editorial comments. This was a rough draft that I have edited and re-written now a number of times. This is part of the serious work (for me, anyway), and not a rhythm exercise like the poems and other prompts that keep me narrowed. These things are really wide-ranging stream-of-consciousness, which is pretty difficult for something meant to be absolutely true. Thanks again.

Hi there, you certainly seem to have your mind set about things. I'm not an American citizen and therefore I'm not qualified to have an opinion on your local politics. Well written. All best. Ulla:))

Everyone is qualified to have an opinion about anything. Most Americans don't know anything about our politics either.

Bravo. Unfortunately, as you claimed, history does repeat itself and many don't want to change. As much as technology improved our economics and made the world shink, the human 'heart' has divided many. It is a pleasure to read your work..

Thank you. The larger project is, as the title implies, a study of opinions about leadership and change throughout American history, alongside some painful personal reflections. You can see some of the presidential pieces on my website:recordingeditorialhistory.wordpress.com Thank you again for your generous comments.

Tabloid permeated civilisation- I liked this usage.may be now you have to change it to whatapp twitter permeated generation
I liked your style of writing .There is a slight touch of sadness at the state of the world and I can almost sense a sigh.
Freedom comes with the responsibility of not using it always and knowing when to use it
My generation in India grew up with a sense of responsibility to our parents, did not do anything to antagonise them and when we are in our sixties are willing to look after our elderly parents.
We could be the only generation who listened to their parents and now are listening to their children!
Sigh!! world changes ,perception changes and the heroes of yesterday are seen as the villains today.
Virtual six as I ran out of sixes ******

Thank you for your comments. There is, of course, a considerable shift in how family treats one another and what the children expect from their future not just generational, but of course depending on where you are and the culture you have been raised under. And of course in America not everyone is like my broad generalizations here. It is more about reading the seething frustration of the changing times. I see this everywhere, this bowing to extremism and selfishness. I do not believe, really, that things used to be better. This is the premise of the book for which this piece serves as an introduction. If you are interested I have published a few of my historical-editorial pieces on US Presidents on my website: recordingeditorialhistory.wordpress.com

The world is going to hell in a handbasket if we don't put a damn stop to it and get the idiots out of the White house who care nothing about you and me.

I don't think that this would really help. It's wrong to blame just the greedy monsters in leadership (we can do that in any era). It is the culture itself. It has been said that we elect the leaders that we deserve. I am very unhappy to say that we probably deserve Trump. Thank you for your comments.

Thank you for such kind words. So this whole piece I'm writing has a mind of its own, by now. I am about 2/3 the way through the primary text, although I expect that when I get up to the US Presidents I have lived through, the narrative will likely get longer. FDR is about 20 pages and is really about the rise of conspiracy culture. I have published a handful of these chapters. Here: recordingeditorialhistory.wordpress.com That's my website, with the same title as I've given to this book: Recording Editorial History. Thanks again.

I read this trying to see you in my minds eye, trying to know your age. I imagine someone fairly young and privileged in a way, who sees the bigger picture through jaded eyes. This is very interesting, albeit wordy, and I think our society is in decline, not progressing to better things. History proves all empires fall and the U.S. is certainly no exception. Best of luck with the final book...
