I'm so sorry, Marilyn-- all these years later, I still miss my dogs-- a huge sadness that remains. People say time heals, but it really does not, we just don't think of the losses as often.

You've written a very beautiful tribute.

Hi Dawn. Thank you so much for your kind words. I know you feel the same. I only have two pets left out of seven. The others all passed as geriatrics, as did Maija. She is with her daddy now. I still have my Jewel (kitty) and my Emma (dog). My daughter doesn't want me to get any more animals, to let them go by attrition. That is hard to do. I hope my two don't leave the planet until I'm ready to go. Even when they are no longer with us, we think of them and treasure them. They are all unique. Hugs, Marilyn

They sure are all unique, and yet their love for us is all the same -- unconditional. How can ANYONE NOT miss that? It's SO RARE among humans... *sigh*

Love will always be a universal understanding (human, animal, place, thing, stuff). Sorry your pet passed. Jewels are forever. Good consonance rhyming with -ness. Nice poem.

Hi Alicia. Thank you so much for your empathy and fabulous rating for my little Maija. She was a sweetie and was the life of the household. Things are a lot duller without her spark. Marilyn

Lovely little 5-7-5 in memory of your much loved Maija. Love the rhyming of the gladness-madness-sadness- they all portray much emotion. Great sign off too
cheers,
valda

Love this! Love that you've penned it as a letter! I like the structure and the meter and rhyme of your second, third and fourth lines! So sad and so so good! Thanks for sharing, Marilyn!

Marilyn, your Maija sounds like she was a character and a lovable one at that. A wonderful tribute to a spirited being caringly expressed in this 5-7-5 format. A beautiful shared sketch and poem. ~DD

Hi DD. Thank you so much for your wonderful review, rating and comments about little Maija. She was 16 lbs of dynamite, a little busybody who will be dearly missed. It's hard to let our beloved pets go. Her ashes were returned to me yesterday. Bitter sweet, but I'm happy to have her home. Marilyn

So sorry for your loss, Marilyn. Losing a beloved pet leaves such a hole in one's heart. Your Caroline captured the essence of Maija beautifully in her sketch. She's a talented artist! I love "whirlwind of gladness" and "busybody of madness". You've created great imagery for your reader in a mere 17 syllables. Love the mono-rhyming too with gladness/madness/sadness.

Hugs,
Connie

Hi Connie. Maija's passing was the last physical link to Bob. She started out being his dog, but, of course, became mine. She had personality plus. Thank you for your wonderful review and comments. Her ashes were returned to me yesterday. Hugs, Marilyn

Had to have a SIX! Sorry for your loss. May I use your daughter's picture in my Little Dog book (autobiography) someplace? Will give her credit. Jack Russells in Australia are known escape artists? What about where you are? Excellent free-style poem.

Hi Sankey. Thank you so much for your fabulous review and rating of this tiny poem celebrating Maija. She will be missed. Yes, she was a live wire and always into something. She didn't miss a trick. Good luck with the publishing of your book. I spoke to my daughter. She agreed to allow the use of her art. Please give her credit as: Caroline Carlson, Plover, WI, USA. A beautiful 5-7-5 poem about Maija, married with the lovely artwork by your daughter.
Loved the added bonus of the rhyming throughout.
You paint such a wonderful picture of the happy, curious, excited doggy.
Sad for your loss.
Mitchell

Your daughter most certainly is incredibly talented, Marilyn. I'd give my right arm to be able to draw like that (which isn't as silly as it sounds, as I'm left handed).

I know exactly how you feel about your beloved Maija. We lost our adored Kelpie, Misty a couple of months back. Our other beloved "girl", Bella is pushing 15. She's half blind, completely deaf, and can hardly walk from room to room without stumbling. She's had epilepsy all her life, but lately the big fits have decreased, she just seems to constantly have "moments", where she seems to almost black out. Sometimes, she can manage to jump up onto a chair, or climb, with the aid of a step. Other times, not. Somehow, in spite of all her difficulties and troubles, and even though it's obvious she is feeling her age, she is still a happy thing.

I'm not sure how long ago you lost Maija. If it was very recently, I hope the worst passes soon, and you are just left with many happy memories.

Thanks for sharing, Craig

Hi Craig. Thank you for your very nice review and comments. I have been 'babying' Maija along for a couple of years. Bob passed away in January and Maija was technically his dog. However, she was really mine. Bob and I were divorced but I became his caregiver when he came to live with me upon us relocating to Wisconsin. Maija had been failing at 16 and the kindest thing was to make the decision to euthanize her even though it was a hard one. Loving animals as I do, I've had to face that dreaded decision before, but it never gets easier. I believe you wrote something about the passing of your, Misty. Each one is special. Now I have only one dog and one kitty. I'm letting them go by attrition due to my age. I don't want any of them to outlive me because their fate would be "iffy" once I'm gone. Maija's ashes were returned to my yesterday.

Regarding your Bella, as long as she's happy, not suffering, and eating, I'd keep her going. Vets usually go by whether they're in pain and/or not eating as the warning sign that it's getting time. Enjoy Bella for as long as you can. Marilyn

I'm sorry for your loss. They are really good dogs and very, very smart. A friend of mine had one that took a shine to me. She would talk to me when I came over and get in my lap. I like this well written ode to your furry friend. Well done Marilyn!

Hi Jeffrey. Thank you so much for your nice comments and review of this short piece on the loss of Maija. She was smart--smarter than me, for sure. Had me all figured out, what side of the bread butter was on. She will be missed. Her ashes were returned to me yesterday. Marilyn
