Loved this one. And it is right on the money. (Lol-cliche!) Anyway, I agree that it should be enjoyable to write and I have to say that I like many of those famous writers who are constantly breaking the rules. I will take your advice, and tho I'm eighty, I'm still learning, even if I don't read novels much anymore. Good writing and you're right. Family comes first before anything. People are always first with me. Sorry, pet people. Lol.

I enjoyed this commentary, G. You make several valid points that apply to all. However, many do not want to hear them about their own writing. Thanks for sharing. Jan

I think its good advice and good for the site that its out there. The best advice is to read, and discover what the possibilities are, because without that, you are like someone driving around a landscape without a map. I can't count how many people here have told me 'I don't read poetry' or 'I don't read short fiction'. I don't understand what these people are doing on the site, other than social media gratification. Everyone has to find a style, and that comes from practice, practice, practice. You have to develop the personality in your voice, and the ability to articulate your emotions on the page. estory

This is super advice Gareth. Especially that last para. We have to live outside of the internet, tho, for some of us, things like this are about all we have left. Lol! I believe some writers, i.e. King, Rowling, just got lucky by hitting on the right theme at the right time. There's writers on this site as good as they are, imo. You. Hump. Etc... :) S.

Great closing not with your daughter. This has lots of good advice and is well penned (flawless mechanics).

I agree with much of this, and some I only agree with to some extent but not fully, such as:

If you show everything and tell nothing, you'll end up with a mighty weighty manuscript, but that's okay, because if you cut out all the other things, that'll balance it out, won't it? [No]

It is possible to show and not tell without making it weighty (though it takes mastery). BUt I agree that some telling is needed and also: The key word in writing, for me, is balance. YES!

**
This is true....

Always remember that you, as the author, always have the final say. It is that simple. Learn the rules. Read copiously. Absorb all you can. Take what you want. The key thing is that it is down to you, no one else.

BUT - taking advice from others should be discouraged, as long as it is weighed through one's own filters.

**
Suffering for art? Lighten up. Have fun, or else why bother? I'm not a tortured soul looking for expression. I have a wife and daughter. I have other family and friends. I work full-time for a living, and I have a life. So should you...

This sounds judgmental, as if you are measuring everyone else by your personal yardstick and values. Even tortured artist without family have a life they have chosen, with its ups and downs just like family life. I think if this last one would be reworded in a way that is less judgemental and commanding and more suggestive, then readers may listen to it better. Making them feel defensive will turn them off. Perhaps focusing on the main point as being your personal preference and not end on: "So should you..." That would be more in alignment with your titles claim of being humble! *wink*

Just my two cents, humbly offered, with love...

Best Wishes,
rd

I get what you mean about the last point, although it is sort of part of the point of this. It's an oxymoron of a post... lol

You speak like a well-experienced writer. In other words, you have been through the ringer with the ups and downs of learning this craft. For one, you make good sense. I feel as if you are saying what I am unable to say. Thanks for the encouraging words, G.

Thank you - thank you!! Your writing is full of common sense and a judicious take on the suggestion to just totally remove this or that. It was quite enlightening to see that chart, too!
Enjoy the reading adventure with your daughter!

Good pointers and advice here. When it comes right down to it, I guess there is no exact, perfect way to write. As you say, some of the best known have made mistakes.

Nothing better than family and friends, especially the wee one.

You have some valid points there, Gareth. I've noticed with the two books I'm writing at the moment, the time travel with Veronica and Mildred, I've spent so much time watching out for the ly words, trying not to put in cliches .... and so on, that sometimes I miss what is supposed to be going on. The book I'm writing for Eric is so different. I actually do have fun with that one, it's probably got to many adverbs, loads of things I shouldn't have, and do you know what, I haven't worried about it at all. I just like the story I'm writing for my grandson. If I didn't worry so much with my main novel, you might not pick up so many errors! lol. (all of which I'm grateful for.) My emails are all about helpful books to buy and tips to use to improve your writing. If I was to go through them all I wouldn't have time to do anything else. Another thing I agree with, is reading. I read every night and the books I read are never of the genre I've been writing.
Well done on this, Gareth, I am only to happy to take your advice. :)) Sandra xx

There's a place for most stuff. if we all slavishly follow the same style guides, the soul kicks kicked out of the writing. I like to vary my styles. I know some find that annoying but it's fun for me. lol G

This is an interesting post. I think we do whatever we do for ourselves only. If in the process it resonates with someone else--great, but we can't count on that. None of us can be what we are not. Just keep plugging away. Marilyn
