Hi Lance,

I'm not so sure your interpretation of Nativism is entirely spot on. It doesn't necessarily mean that you believe in your superiority over others but that your interests are catered for, protected and advanced before non-native folk. It may include a sense of supremacy but is not necessarily equated as such at all times. Again, its a concept, such as communism/socialism that folk have high-jacked for their own ideals and purposes, much as you do yourself here.

It's odd how you reference Germany for Nativism when their leader at their worst wasn't even German...

That being said, this was quite a good read, if you're into bias. It always comes across in your writing, despite the equal opportunity potshots you profess. lol but then, I believe this is true of us all.

Good piece.

Hitler believed Austria to be a part of the greater German Reich from the time of Frederick the Great. He convinced many of his followers that the resumption of that empire, which also included western Poland, most of Hungry and Czechoslovakia, as well as north eastern parts of France. To him and the other Nazis, there was nothing more German than stolen Austria, which had once been the cultural center of the world. Beyond that, this piece is from a larger project called Recording Editorial History. What it ultimately is is a history project discussing what people believed and believe today contrasted with fact-based reality. The chatty style is meant to imply I'm some friend in a bar slurring over what I think happened in the past, according to other people. The final project will have an introduction stating this in a much more professional sounding manner so I am not written off as a kook or conspiracy theorist. I am fascinated by the breadth of conspiratorial thinking throughout the ages and wanted to chronicle its impact on organized civilization as a precursor to the collapse of empires. Thanks for your comments, as usual.

Thank you so much for sharing this well thought out peice. Your opening line is very solid and you have many relevant details pertaining to current history. I would have however, liked to learn more about the history of nativism and how people by into this philosophy/belief system of superiority. Best of luck to you in all your endeavors!

There are numerous causes of this way of thinking, but the primary one would be a feeling of helplessness in a rapidly changing world. When people believe that the world as they always believe it is supposed to be is changing, they tend to lash out and blame whomever gets in their way. Thank you for your comments.

Having pride in one' country isn't necessarily a bad thing. Nowadays people are expected to apologize for loving their country, being white and being male. I don't believe the comparison to Nazi Germany is a fair one. Not all the same conditions are present. There isn't a world wide depression, native or naturalized citizens aren't being rounded up and sent to camps for extermination, sand we are not gearing up for a war to invade our neighbors. I think making the illegal immigration issue about race is wrong. The key word is "Illegal" .

There is, however, world wide economic worry, doubled by a greedy self-absorption that has been far less present in the past larger scale society (we can blame drastically advanced technology. Also, the nazis did not start the 'final solution' until six years after they took over Germany. The President said has exploited these same nervous fears, the paranoid uncertainty and an enhanced conspiratorial worldview to paint these people not just as illegals, but as genuine threats instead of refugees fleeing for their lives. To keep with the same example, this is like telling Jews fleeing Nazi Germany that they are not allowed in, because we do not trust that their motives are pure and we do not want them ruining our economy and taking our jobs. It honestly is no different. And on the last point, remember that the President lamented the lack of immigration from Norway. Let us rest on that point for a moment here, the nation that is considered among the happiest on earth. Compare that to people fleeing drug cartels that butcher whole families and psychopathic tyrants that treat everyone like slaves or enemies of the state. I stand behind my comparison and the history I speak of. Of course it doesn't have to be a bad thing to have pride in your nation--actually it is usually very good. But turning it into an absolutist faith is no better than any other evangelical obsession that takes the place of human understanding.

Again, your commentary evokes thoughtful contemplation. I'm always searching for the antidote to civilization's inevitably downfall. I'm still looking. But ever hopeful. Congrats on another brilliant observation.

Thank you. This one, similar to an earlier one on Brett Kavanaugh and that now forgotten disgrace, was written in an almost pure rage. Thanks again.

Lance, I'm in agreement with your take on this Nationalistic phenomenon, and the resulting 'tribalism'. Nationalism is always a pseudonym for xenophobia.

From a writing perspective, I'm somewhat put off by your professorial
'Today, I'd like to discuss . . ." approach. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with it, but I, for one, am not comfortable being lectured to. And that's what this feels like, a lecture.

I mean no offense, just providing my input.

Peace, Lee

I appreciate your editorial input and I think you're right. I tried to make it more conversational, like I do with most of these posts. I think I was just really annoyed while I was writing this and was lecturing at the fucking President. Thank you for your comments.

I'm glad you took no offense. For what it's worth, Lance, I'm as frustrated with and appalled by Trump as you are.

I take oblique shots at him in my fiction, but frontal assaults are ineffective. His base has declared war on logic--they resist it on principle. L
