So much love oozes out of your writing and passion to overshadow the hatred event disclosed. I love your imagery and the words you choose to set the right tone and describe so clearly what compelled you to write this poem.

RGStarr,
As promised, I went to your portfolio here and Visions of Dixie made me weep.
I am not black..
I am not brown...
But I am ashamed of my ancestors that would believe that any human human....less than equal....or simply less than.
Your words:
Hate - handstitched in pockets without names...
Fists like hailstones to a heart exposed..
Made my heart weep...

And how dare I...
whatever color....creed....race or gender I am...
ever use the word Nigger.
I can not imagine using a term such as that without understanding the demeaning nature of its meaning.

Thank you for sharing your talents, your insights and your knowledge with the Fan Story readers/writers. What an incredible opportunity you are giving us to learn from you.
This retired teacher is so privileged/honored to have met you through this site- and when your book is published...
you may just find my wife and I contacting you for a way to purchase it.
With respect,
Sammielwf

A very emotional read RG, and made the more so because it comes from 'the pain of knowing'. It feels, to me, like something has happened to bring this into the forefront, your need to write of it, a reminder to us all that life isn't a bed of roses for everyone. Good luck in the contest,
cheers.

Roy,

This is a compelling poem, which provides a painful reality of the racism that existed and still exists in our society.

Sadly, America seems to be regressing as to racism. Almost every week, I hear about a race-driven incident that occurred somewhere in America.

I have not tackled the subject of racism in my poetry. Writing on this subject requires intensity, understanding, creativity and the ability to imprint an everlasting message in the reader's thoughts. This poem, my friend, has it all.

Hopefully, it would make a difference in our society.

Hi, my dear friend. Thank you so much for going back to this. Such a pleasure at seeing your name...a little difficult times for me at the moment, but hanging in there. Yes, and you are right, and to right them correctly, though there is no correct way for injustice, one must write with understanding, simplicity and heart, without reasoning of blame but pity, and hope.
Thank you so much, as well for the sixth star.
    My best wishes.

RG--I began reading and set aside this poem several times over several days. I simply could not read it through. It is so wrenchingly raw with emotion. I can't imagine what it took you to write it. Setting aside the social issue that as humans we have the capacity to be so cruel to each other, your ability to frame it in this poem is extraordinary. Thank you for your bravery. Caroline

Thank you so much for this tremendous feedback dear author. Yes, sometimes we need to walk where isolated, think where undesired, and express where silence.
    Thank you so much.
Thank you for the six stars. Hope to read something from you soon.
    My best wishes.

The thing that speaks to me the most in this one is your voicing that this poem has to be written, as if it cries out inside you. The photo has to be shown, the stories have to be told, the events have to be remembered. There will be time to write of apples and Jesus and sweet words later, but sometimes you can't let something pass without comment. And you comment here powerfully and poetically - I love the rhythms of this one. It reminds me of The Invisible Man, particularly this passage: "I feel the need to reaffirm all of it, the whole unhappy territory and all the things loved and unloveable in it, for it is all part of me."

Superb!

Wow, this is really powerful RG. We've lived through some horrendous acts of inhumane cruelty in our times and it was even worse before. I've always wondered how this was considered anything to do with the right thing to do.

Thank you for sharing.

Gloria

I like the internal and end rhyme in this rhyming free verse poem of war and growing into different people because of it. I knew WOG because it was used in the historic fiction book I just read set in Egypt during WWII.

Keep writing

Joan

Oh this is hard to read! The emotions are just overwhelming to me.Certain words..stab like a knife. What a torn and cruel world we live in.The stories are countless. I can't imagine the sadness a loving God must feel... I'd write more, but your words rest heavy on my heart. Not because I'm ignorant of the cruelty in this word..but because I feel it so strongly.

Thank you so much. Your words touch hearts.
I wrote of then, but when there are people like you in the now, then much of thought is directed here.

My best ...and good luck in the competition,I'd like to see you win.

    Have a great day.
...and thank you for the six stars.

Keep warm, and keep that head cold in check...a day at a time.

    My best.

That makes me sick to my stomach. To think people did, and do that to fellow human beings. What sort of world is this? The white people have lots to answer for, and they will one day. This was heart wrenching, my friend. I'm sorry I'm out of sixes already. xx Sandra x
