I love this story. Your memories are poignanat and heartwarming. You have a good beginning that opens the awareness of the reader to a southern family scene. The focus of a kitchen, which is the room that is the heart of the home, shows us how your grandmother and her kitchen are part of your heart. Good job.

A very well-written true story. There are many things that other will find trash that for us are the biggest treasures the earth ever saw, and we hold it close to our hearts and know it is the little things that really matter.

Beautifully written! I can completely relate as my grandmother certainly showed her love through her cooking. The kitchen was the heart of the her house. I love that you covered the boyhood memories and refered to her sharing her memories ("like dog-eared files from a cabinet").

What a wonderful job you have done in sharing your story of Grandma Kilgore and her simple little pan. YOU PUT US THERE in her small kitchen cooking for her only grandson. You do a fabulous job of giving us her backstory and that of her beloved pan. I especially like the paragraph in which you describe just what it meant to her and how it represented her love for her husband long after he died. Terrific ending where you inherit and hang it in your own kitchen. This entry should do very well in the contest and is definitely worthy of six stars. Rod

I apologize that I do not have a six for this outstanding piece. This made me tear up. Your memory is just like mine, remembering the most minute details, sights, smells and feelings. Things that were cherished as this pan was, takes on a life of their own with new memories to be added. I am happy for you!
All my best,
Sally

I enjoyed this tremendously. You may write fantasy and sci novels, but you are a natural storyteller. My favorite line has to do with Grandma's shack being tucked in a corner of her sister's property, which was tucked in a corner of northern Louisiana.
She reminds me of so many southern women, my grandmother included. She always preferred to stay home and watch soap operas. They were simple women with good values. They appreciated what little they had and did not want what they did not need.
Cooking for family was a life's calling. It was enough, and they did it well. That skillet is your Grandma's legacy. She would love that it has a place of honor in your house.
Thank you for sharing your story.
