Oh, my! That really deserves all the accolades you've received. The story you tell is stunning enough, but your well crafted poem enhances it beautifully. I love the internal rhyming. Very thoughtful.

this soul sojourner - lovely description of the treasured chest that inside tells an unexpected story. Beautifully written story in a poem of a story of one soldier, that didn't make it and a marine that did, and went on to become a much loved father. My tears while reading means this well deserves a 6
cheers,
valda

Really well done. I am way behind in reviewing as I haven't been on much. I am so tired. My job is killing me, so I've been in bed early and no reading. Trying to catch up. This is really very well done. Rox

Loved this great story poem, Dean. The beat of the meter would easily lend itself to country western lyrics. It was probably not uncommon to find that life found a way to keep a family producing without the primary actors making the babies together. Lots of drama to be sure.

I found this: mementoes is probably the word you wanted here. Momentous means something of extreme importance.

Happy day.

Wow Dean! What a touching story presented in this outstanding poem. It deservesa six, but I already gave you on this week. Got to spread them around to other deserving poets. Nevertheless, I was deeply touched. Being a step-father (through divorce)to two myself, I am moved when they call me dad. You definitely have great command of these long metric structures. Bravo.

Wow, this was so well written, my friend. It was great to see the tie in, at the end, as both men, the father who died at war and the step-father who loved him like his own, were true heroes. Your rhyme scheme is really good, and nothing at all seems forced. Poetry is great. Poetry that gets you thinking is outstanding. Your poetry definitely fits the latter model. Keep up the good work!

Good morning, Dean

Enjoyed the poem. The last stanza not only shows the boy's new appreciation, new respect for his father as well as recognizing his father raised him with out complaint, bias or resentment towards the man who was his biological father. Well done! Brings back memories when used to rummage through my grandparents' attic. Well done.

Take care and stay safe,

Ray

Take care and stat safe,

Ray.

I am so very sure that this took you a very long time to collect and compose, Sir Dean, and it is just wonderful -- in fact, 'wonderful' does not at all do it justice! :) ;) I have a tear in my eye and I think you might have started a bit of healing in my heart after my Mother-in-law visit and some of the 'blow back' on the essay contest (never doing that again)...
Absolutely the best 'story in a poem' that I've read since joining.. thanx for sharing your talents and a bit of your self in each write...we're all better for it! :) ;) Happy New Year! :) Yvette

Hi Dean,

This is a terrific story in a poem :) My dad was a soldier in the war and my mom is a British War Bride who left her family behind to come to Canada. Military stories of all kinds touch my heart. I feel you have a strong contender with this poem. Best wishes in the contest.

Joy xx
