I agree with everything you've written. I won't tell you my age but I grew up with the Beatles and Beach Boys. That should give you a clue. our parents had guns and we went to shooting range but no one would ever dream of taking a gun to school. That's just insane. The sad part is that the Boomers for the most part raised the brats of today.

Best wishes, Rita

Wow! You went back a ways. I'd forgotten I'd written this. Maybe I'll do another one this year.

A window into a more respected and beloved time. Of course, memories are often more lustrous than they actually were, given the comparison of modern times. Good read, though.

Thank you, dear Barbara. This was wonderful and much appreciated. I will be 64 this year and right behind you. I agree, our nation is in big trouble. Our moral decay is obvious. The liberal progressive left wants socialism and seek to break down our freedoms and foundational faith to get it. My husband and I are one of the few conservative couples remaining in his large family. We were all brought up in similar fashion as you described. It was all we knew.

Thank you so much for your bold and courageous article.
All my best,
Sally

Hello Barbara,
Happy Birthday. 65 is one of those milestone years when many become eligible for SS and Medicare. I enjoyed your list of changes, having experience many of them myself.
It seems nearly all generations have similar feelings. I remember when Rock and Roll was going to ruin the country.
Those were the Days!
I think we have lost some important aspects of life, like imagination and going outdoors, but the pendulum may swing back again.
Anyway, you probably qualify for "senior" discounts, now. So there is at least one good thing about it.
Great post
Robert

-Very nice image, Barbara.
-I am a little over 65, so I know
what kind of milestone that is,
if you want to call it that!
-Hope it was a good birthday.
-Since we grew up in the
same era, things are pretty much what
you said-there was respect for each other,
our country, our teachers, and so on.
-I agree with your final thought; our
country is in trouble; I am sure other
nations do not respect us as much, either.
-I appreciate all the reflecting you
did on your birthday.
-If you would like to review it,
I wrote a poem about my growing
up in a small town.

You are very welcome. It's hard to follow a lot of stories due to time constraints and family. I was glad to read a piece by you and enjoyed your observations.

I understand your feelings completely. The educational system isn't what it used to be--my niece's son and daughter are high school but I wonder about their reading and writing. Those skills seem totally ignored, and I never see them reading a book. They make good grades, too. They think athletic scholarships and volunteer work are the ticket to college. Whatever happened to academic studies. The values you describe are lacking in today's society, unfortunately, and our country is suffering because of it. You certainly make excellent comments in this. Maybe the old fogies have it right after all. Great work! judi

I know you said don't worry about reviewing this, but I will soon be 66, and your words strike home. All that you have said shows how important it is that the world hits the pause button, and reviews the many positive values that are slowly disappearing from our society. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

Well, then, I suppose a hearty "HAPPY BIRTHDAY" is the order of the day for you, Barbara.
So, without further adieu...

...heh-heh-heh...
I wholeheartedly concur with every single point you've presented here.
My parents had to BEG us to come inside for dinner. When school was out we would leave our respective houses at 9:00 am after a hearty breakfast (after making our beds, of course), and would not be seen again until suppertime.
Unless Mom told us otherwise, of course.
They didn't worry that we'd be kidnapped, raped or tortured.
We weren't forced to wear helmets, knee pads and elbow pads when we rode our bicycles.
Try to get a kid to go outdoors today and they'll look at you like you have a third arm growing outta your forehead!

An essay nicely done and so true. Your still a teenager compared to me. All your factors showed that this country was very united. Of course, there were times of turmoil, but in past generations, RESPECT was the keyword. A word that is not in many of today's youth vocabulary. GOOD WORK!!
