OMG What does Tonto mean? Are you native American? I gave you thumbs up in the contest for such a suspenseful interesting account of Lone Ranger. I didn't know Tonto meant a term of disrespect. NICE WRITE. Read mine also. lolol liberty justice

    Hi Liberty,

I didn't know Tonto was disrespectful, and maybe it's not.

Except in Spanish I think it means someone who is a bit slow.

Of course, The Lone Ranger is about chasing down outlaws, not American Indians.

Nevertheless when I was young the Indians were always "bad" and the cowboys "good."

History tells us things were more complex.

    Thanks

    Richard.

The Lone Ranger was one of the better known TV shows. I did not know Tonto was a word of disrespect. For sure, my kids all respected the heck out of Tonto. I think they liked him better than the Lone Ranger. I'm sorry this happened. It is enough to sour a person on a lot of things. Good picture. Good job.

    Hi Jaye,

    Thanks for your comment.

My main question is why I used to believe in my early youth Indians:bad, cowboys:good.

I now question a lot of what I was told in my youth. Not so much facts but opinions.

    Thanks

    Richard.

Questioning is good. I can have my opinion. You can have your opinion. We both have the same facts to deal with.

Tonto was a name attributed to the Western Apaches, that came from the Spanish, and translated into the word foolish. Tonto was given to the Western Apaches by other Native American Apache tribes. Kimosahbee meant "looks out in secret," because the Lone Ranger wore a mask. Yes, over time one's perspectives do seem to change.

    Hi Brett,

    Thanks for your insight.

I agree, there are many aspects of the past that have been reviewed in my lifetime.

    Thanks,

    Richard.

Very good "Good Old Days" contest entry. I remember doing a book report on the measles blankets and learning about how cruel our American government was towards the Indians to take their land. It killed me because my ex-boyfriend was 1/16th Cherokee Indian. In addition, his grandmother who I loved very much was 1/2 Cherokee and she was someone who I looked to for wise and sage advice. Anytime anyone champions the cause of anyone with an Indian heritage I will be supportive of their writing. Thank you, Richard, for letting me kill two birds with one stone. I owed you a 6 for many weeks, and I was able to freely offer this to you as it was certainly deserving of the 6 stars. Good luck to you in the contest. Cheers, Fonda

    Fonda,

    Thanks for the six!!

Am looking up actual events re Native Americans.

Will look up your recommended book, mentioned in your other note.

Am aware that 99% of N.A. stories are now lost.

    Thanks,

    Richard

I am assuming you are American - not British?
At any rate, the way the American Indian was treated WAS terrible and not something Americans are proud of. However, I also used to watch The Lone Ranger, and Tonto was his friend and they had great adventures together. I don't think the word, Tonto, in itself, is a word of disrespect unless the speaker intends it to be. Today, he would be called his sidekick. A neat word, I think.
But I do understand your empathy for the American Indian. (not a good part of our history)

This is really good. It's a great example of changing historical perspectives. I think that we all route for the Indians, at least a little.
You did not have to explain the Lone Ranger to me. My mom, who is on hospice, lives with me. She watches several episodes every day.
Good luck in the contest.
