Nicely done. Thought you were taking the ax to chop a head off for stew! Maybe you were, but I chose to think otherwise. Love the poem and the photo chosen is perfect. The poem flows well, great rhyme and rhythmic beat. Very unique and well done! Good luck!

Ha ha! No. I built them a new roost to keep warm instead :)

No. I was sure you didn't hack off a head by the end of the poem. Felt quite a bit relieved!

A very well-written story poem about the chicken den. They lay eggs for breakfast while the ones who cannot produce eggs anymore get cooked in a pot for stew.

Nope... that's not what this story is about at all. Did you read it? lol

reply by Sandra du Plessis on 15-Feb-2019
I did read it, and that is what I saw or understand about your story. I may have misunderstood the intention of the story, or just tired of all the catching up after a week of not able to review due to power failure and limited data.

Hi Mystery Author,

What a delightful animal story poem.

Nothing at all amiss here to suggest for you to improve upon.

Ha ha! Love the image you've selected. It complement your verse well. (Although, I must say, I'm sorry to know that the hens arrived disheveled.)

This is a great contest entry! You should do quite well.

Thanks for sharing and good luck!

Jan

I don't need author information to know who wrote this. It's a wonderful poem, but you had me scared for a moment there when you went for the axe. I love the artwork, with that little leg popping out. The whole story is delightful!!

That was fascinating. It never occurred to me that chickens had to be rescued. Your poem was very well crafted and the picture was a real attention-getter. Thanks for sharing!

Hahaha, this is excellent, Anonymous Poet.
I raised chickens for three years until I moved this year in October.
It's a lot of work, no doubts about it.
Like your poetic little fowl tail here (or should I have written foul tale?), I too had just one rooster. There was also not a single speck or blade of grass left in the area I had them penned up in--all 26 of 'em.
Impeccably well rhymed and metered throughout.
This should be a top contender in the contest.
Good luck to you!

Thank you, dean :) I rescued a wee flock of battery hens a few years ago. I guess my experience led me to write this. Only my chickens were frightened to death. Literally. I was at work and my two gentle Labradors went bonkers one day, when I left the chicken coup latch afar. I came home to find five dead and three practically naked after the dogs had chased them and pulled their feathers out.

    :(

    cheers you

reply by Dean Kuch on 19-Feb-2019
    I know what you mean.
My son has a Bull Mastiff, German Shepherd mix that was dead set on killing my hens. She would avoid the rooster because he was a mean, foul black beast and fought back. He attacked you whenever you entered the coup to feed and water the chickens.
    Very protective.
Karma, the dog's name, wound up killing four hens before we got her to stop.
Anyhow, I've prattled on long enough.
    You're more than welcome.
    ~Dean

You haven't prattled on at all, Dean.

It's sometimes nice to get to know the people behind their stories :)

    Thanks, Love

We did this. Took battery hens that couldn't walk and were missing feathers and such a sorry sight. My granddad loved how they came back. Just as your poem said...it's criminal what hens go through. I loved this story
God bless

Fun surprise with the ax and the wood. Good format, rhyme and story telling mode in this poem. It works for any general audience and I enjoyed reading it. Suitable for the current weather too.
