This is beautiful, Connie. A wonderful poem on aging and talents we can no longer use, but once were the joy of our lives and those of our family. I'm not a good baker at all, but my mom was. Good luck in the contest. God bless her at 102 years. Marilyn

Thank you so much, Marilyn, for your delightful review Forgive me for not responding sooner, but we just returned
from a week in Disneyland where our little Jack turned five. He loved all the attention he got from the Disney characters who acknowledged his birthday badge and hat.
    Thanks again, my friend.

Hello Connie :)
This cinquain hit home for me.
It reminded me a little of my mum, who no longer does some of the things she loved to do (embroidery and the like) because her fingers are not as nimble as they once were.
Your poem was a little reminder that time is precious.
Good luck in the contest.
Best wishes, Debra :)

Thank you, Debra, for such a thoughtful review.
Always good to hear from you. I hope your mum still gets some pleasures in life even if she has had to give
    up a few things.
    My best to you.

It's when the elderly lose their sense of purpose in life that they lose hope. If she has arthritis in her hands, she can't bake. Poor thing. Regards, Lou

One hundred and two years old. WOW!
Perhaps baked goods are not that bad
for us. What do you think? LOL Bless
her heart, she surely has a good one.
I wonder, does she miss baking? I miss
all the things I can do no more..
Well done, Connie. Nancy:)

Thank you, Nancy, for your review.
You asked if my mother-in-law missed baking. I'm sure she does although these days she is having a hard
time even getting up out of her chair, so she mostly just sits in her room with her hands folded on her lap and takes lots of naps sitting up. It's sad to see such a vibrant mother and grandmother being so sedate. She remembers much of her youth but very little of what is happening an hour ago.
    Thanks again, my friend.

I am fighting to keep my brain working. Hope I can. My Aunt was senile at my age. My sister had Alzheimer's at a younger age but lived to be 92. It's scary, but maybe I'll be an exception. LOL

reply by the author on 07-Mar-2019
Given the quality of your poetry, I'd say that your brain is working exceptionally well! But I understand your concerns because I, too, worry at times that my brain is going to suddenly not work as well. All I have to do is forget one little thing, and I start to panic. I guess that fear comes with aging.

This is such a wonderful cinquain, I love how it creates strong images of a kitchen filled with the fragrance of baking, a loving mother creating yummy things for her family, and the anticipation of those waiting to taste them. Thank you for this delightful experience. I can't see how this could be any better. It should do well in this contest. ~ MM

Besides being the outstanding poet that you are, you are also a sweetheart, Adonna.
Thank you for such an encouraging review and for the six-star rating, which I certainly
didn't expect. These days, having been away from FanStory for so long, I'm surprised if
I even get ten reviews, much less an exceptional rating. So your review and rating were
    a pleasant and welcome surprise.
    Thank you again, my friend.
    Hugs,
    Connie

Connie, it is a special treat to see you here, whether in a review or a posted poem. I hope your busy life will allow you a little more time for sharing your creativity with us here. I find my time too often taken up by the demands of life, but this is a pleasant island to which I return whenever possible. I love it when I find my favorite people here too. Too many are now gone.

102! Wow!
That is an awesome age to reach.
She may no longer bake, but I bet
she has great stories to share.
Just think, she was a teenager
during the depression. Wow.
This is a wonderful entry,
Blessings...

Thank you for your wonderful review. Yes, my mother-in-law does have some great stories to share, mostly stories about her youth. Sadly, she can't remember something, from ten minutes ago but she has a remarkable memory when it comes to when she was a young girl.
I want to thank you again for all those member cent pumps you gave me. That was so sweet!
    My best to you.

I forgot to mention this before, but I notice in your profile that Elizabeth Berg is one of your favorite authors. Me too!! There was a time when I think I had read several of her novels and it was only in the last year that I remembered her and read another one. Unfortunately, I can't think of any of the titles right now, but I do remember I liked all that she wrote.

reply by Irish Rain on 06-Mar-2019
I liked all her books too, as much as Anne Tyler. I liked 'Open House' the best. She wrote quite a few, 'Home Safe', 'True to Form'...I love reading!

Awe, bless her Darling heart. I'm sorry to hear that. Does she still have her right mind? Does she get around alright? I would love to hear the stories she could tell. She has lived a long life. This is really good and I like the message conveyed in this well written poem. Well done and good luck in the contest.

Thank you, Jeffrey, for your most thoughtful review. You asked if she had her right mind and if she gets around alright.
Sadly, she remembers things from her youth but not much from ten or fifteen minutes ago. At least she still knows her children, grandchildren and even her two great grandchildren. About two years ago, she started using a walker but only after we insisted she do so. She is now in assisted living and often spends her days with her hands folded just looking out the window or napping.
    Thanks again.

My mother reached 104 and remained well almost until the last few months. Her hands, like your mother-in-law's, would have done a lot of baking in that time. I enjoyed your cinquain thanks but don't have any suggestions for improvement. I think it is fine as it is.

This cinquain gives us a gentle portrait of a woman who loved to use her hands in the kitchen, but now does not--or cannot--use them as she ages quietly. A great picture chosen to accompany your poem. Rod
